They make an automated call saying something like "although nothing is currently wrong with your accounted, it is urgent you call us to take advantage of low interest rates ..." and ask you to press 1 to speak to someone.

After they'd called me about 3 times I finally did press 1 in order to ask to be taken off the list. I called them and asked who the company was, and then I told the guy I didn't remember having an account with that company. Then he hung up.

I Googled them and they have a website, but the phone number listed there just takes you to a voicemail to 'schedule a free consulation, leave a message.'

The call came in this morning and someone answered.  There was no one on the line but we could not get a dial tone on the phone for several minutes until my husband thought of unplugging the phone and replugging it in.

Here, when someone calls from the jail, it's the number it shows.  When my friend was picked up the other night he used me as his one phone call, and this is the number that came up.  It's happened more than once, so I know who/what it is.

I get calls from 000-000-0000, that's what shows up on my caller id. They call the office phone everyday and I am forced to pick it up because I work the front desk. We have 3 lines on our phone and quite often someone calls and another one with the same caller id calls at the very same moment, tying up 2 of our lines! The 1st one is always a hang up and the 2nd someone is there and wants to update their records with our business information or they call to speak to the owner, whom they will never be able to get a hold of. I told them to stop calling, they still call. I'm very tired of those calls.

My number is on the do not call registry and this is proof that people are using it to get a list of numbers that they DO call. I just got an unknown number(not 000-000-0000) and i tried to play a trick on them.  It was a machine that auto transfered me to a live agent.  They said they could lower my credit card interest rates and I told him that I have a friend who has a really high interest rate and would really appreciate if i could get a number for my friend to call him. He said no, but I kept talking to him sounding disappointed and he went to talk to his supervisor. I faintly heard the conversation and the supervisor said something about "that number (?) on the do not call list... he could use our number to report us..."(which ironically was what i was up to) so then the guy says that he couldnt give out a number. So again I sounded disappointed and asked if i could talk to his supervisor. amazingly, the supervisor had JUST left. But he says i could talk to a floor manager.  So I waited for about a minute and then the line got disconnected.  I heard the convo.  They admited to using the donot call list against the reason it was created. There's GOTTA be something we can do about this.

FYI -- Any modern phone system can produce ANY Caller ID (CID) that the technician takes the time to program in, if the type of telephone service is an ISDN-PRI, a standard digital format line.

Spoofed CIDs are used to stop you from recognizing the caller or to stop you from calling back to complain.  Many of the calls are automated and are calling to find out if a fax machine answers.  If so, they have a sellable commodity -- your fax number.  These usually disconnect the moment the machine hears a voice instead of fax tone.

Same as above.  Annoying phone calls many times a week.  I had one occasion where person responded with a campaign call endorsing a friend of mine who is a State Senator.  When I asked about the number he was calling from and told him I knew the candidate he was nervous and I said goodbye.

I got the same call from the same tele # 000-000-0000 today for the first time, and it said out of area on my caller ID phone. I think it's funny because I never answer my phone if it says that. If they don't have the courtesy or respect to show there number or who they are, then I will do the same by not answering it.
