I keep getting these calls from 000-000-0000 and they hang up when the answering machine kicks in.  How can these calls be stopped?

see Nov. 4 post. Every number should be contacted. The circle of calls start when telephone/online surveys are filled in. The gift calls start coming about winning a tv, car, money, coupons etc. Then the vacation resorts and timeshares call too. Request a DNC for all.  This will eliminate a lot of calls. If anyone you call for a DNC request is rude, call your telephone provider and let them deal with that caller on your behalf.

My son being in his last year of highschool received forms at school to fill out for a contest to win money to go to school from a bank.  I told him it was a marketing ploy and not to give out info.  He applied online a gave out our cell number -- I have begun receiving bank junk mail (not the one he applied to) at home to my and his name and 1-000-000-0000 has begun calling (I haven't answered so I can't say for sure it is them).  My number was only given to family for the past 10 years (or more) and had remained private as I only gave out this number to friends and family -- I had never received any marketing calls until now.

I thought it was illegal to market to kids, but I guess entering a contest to win money to go to school seems like a logical and good thing to do -- until my son has seen all the crap coming in.

Those credit card applications (now that they have his name) will be jammed down our throats as well when he turns 18.

Not to mention his being on marketing lists for life.

I guess my next step is to put in a complaint with the school, for giving these companies access to our kids in the first place, and putting in a complaint with the government to make sure the schools adhere to a non-marketing policy for our children.

I personally have found that one way to know where junk mail comes from and who has sold your name to lists is that if you do apply for something put in some kind of code to recognize who the culprit is e.g. use an initial B. (for bank...)  it has helped me weed out a few who sell your name, you can them contact them and try to hold them accountable.

I've also returned any mailings I've received (unopened). I have in the past on one insistent company gathered a years worth put it in a big envelope and mailed it back to them -- with a note that stated with all the money they had spent on envelopes, paper and stamps it would not be a company I would want to be a part of since they did not know how to manage they're money.

I think it has been a great lesson for him to avoid the marketing trap later -- I don't think he'll ever sign up for anything again.

Just got a call from this number in SW Ontario, Canada...I registered for the National Do Not Call List, and the 31 days grace period has passed...it was the recording starting with the horn and then, "this is your captain speaking..."...I filed a complaint with the DNCL...even with the exceptions to the DNCL, I haven't had a relationship with whomever this is, and they're not political...I'm getting fed up!!!

Same BS. Something about free boarding passes to some stupid cruise... with calypso music, boat horn blowing in the background, and some idiot announcer guy prompting me to take a survey. I simply hung up. Don't fall for this crap people.

My sister had been receiving phone calls from this (000)000-0000 and she chose not to answer it!! Which relieved me!! Because this may sound really stupid but the only time it called was when I was over both a day apart!! So I was kinda freaked out!! All it reminded me of was like a time clock saying it was the end of time!! Which relieves me even more to find out that it may just be a wire tap by FBI or a telemarketer!! Again stupid but freeeeeeeked!!

I just received a call from 000-000-0000 as well, and as others have reported, it was a recording of a captain on a boat, probably trying to offer a free trip or something, but I hung up as soon as I heard it. I always hang up when I receive calls like that.

Ugh. I hate phonescammers. What a bunch of [***].
