i have had some trouble with my computer which occurred while loading sage accounting onto my computer with online assistance. ever since it would appear that i have got a virus with pop ups from various companies popping up regularly trying to sell me something to fix this. i have today got a message from windows in my browser, providing me with a number for free assistance to correct the virus risks. i phoned the number which went strait to music for about 5-10 seconds before a eastern European voice answered (at this point i hung up). this may not be a scam however when phoning a large company such as microsoft i would expect to get an automated service to introduce themselves and direct me where i need to go. also the idea of this being for free unnerved me. i did an agv scan which shows no viruses?

That pop up was not from Microsoft.  Microsoft does not monitor computers or contact people that way.  Update your anti-malware and ignore the pop up.
