- JustinCase replies to Angel| 3 repliesWhy would you waste your time answering a number like this? Nothing good is guaranteed to come from these kinds of spoofed numbers. If it were a half legitimate call, why is the number spoofed?

- Linda replies to Angel| 1 replyDid the same to me. What I don't understand is he knew my full name, (How) but really it is only the name I use, it is not my real name. He kept calling back.

I am just learning how to use electronics. - Slim replies to LindaUm..
Look at the number under discussion.
Specifically, look at the area code for the number being discussed on this thread.
Realize there is no "100" area code.
No knowledge of electronics needed. - JustinCase replies to LindaSlim explained it well enough, however, if you're still wondering, the first and fourth digits are great indications of spoofed numbers. As Slim basically stated, no area code or exchanges within N. America begin with a 0 or 1. Neither digit will work except for either reaching the operator, or calling outside the US. Other examples of spoofed numbers are ones made up of identical digits, also in exchangs, or ones that are not in service if you return calls to the same one that appears on your ID. For instance, you won't get a real call from 555, or 666. Spoofing prevents crooks from being detected or traced and they can make virtually any number or name show up on your ID.

If you ever posted your name & phone number on a social site, or entered that info when ordering online, or otherwise typed it in an insecure computer, or gave it to a friend whose computer was attacked, or filled out an entry form at a fair or a supermarket, or used it on a contest entry form, or were among those whose information was hacked from some organization, or obtained a "new" phone number ... your name & number are probably known to the scammers.
There is also another, very sneaky way.
Does your phone have Caller ID + Caller Name display (CNAM)? If so, you have noted that it usually displays BOTH the phone number and the name of the person calling you. Some scammers take advantage of that, by getting a phone with a CNAM display, and then using a computer program to repeatedly call it, from a computer-driven war dialer. The computer program generates the calling number, and changes the calling number for each call. If the generated number was yours, your name (as well as your number) will appear on their "test" phone, because that name is supplied by the telephone company.
The result is, the receiving phone "sees" both the calling number and the name of the person who is registered with that number! The scammer harvests the name & number data, and sells it to other scammers. - ramsees 22 replies to bobA Scamers claiming to work for dell
- DawnJust got a call from Private Caller. She said her name was Christie and she was calling from Dell Technical Support. She gave me a line about receiving error messages from my computer. She asked me the last time I was on my computer and I said I'm on it all day, every day. I'm on it right now. I told her it's running fine and Dell even updated my drivers and scanned it last week. All is well. She said the problem must be on the back end and asked that I press my Ctrl and the Win flag and then "R" to let them check for what's causing the error messages. I told her I'm not doing that. She asked me why. I said because I've spoken to Dell and they say these are fraudulent calls and she said how could she know this verification information if it were fraudulent? I said you got the info illegitimately from Dell. I asked for her call back number and she gave me 1-800-808-9925 but warned me it could take 5 to 6 hours to get through. I told her that's fine. I'll wait. She kept trying to get around that, so I asked to speak to her supervisor. He came on and I said, "I've contacted Dell, and they've assured me these are fraudulent calls. I'm going to have to trust Dell here." He hung up. I filled out the report at the Dell link.

- DootiGot multiple calls from this number claiming to be Dell Technical support from India (!!). They spoke very bad English with a thick accent (actually Indian) and trying to inform me that my laptop security was breached and that someone was using my IP address and accessing my personal information (identity fraud). Now that freaked me out initially, but the fact is - I had a Dell laptop - which was stolen months ago. These guys switched track after that particular information was shared with them and told me it does not matter if it was stolen or that you have shifted residence (apparently your IP never changes, no matter where you go high or hell!), I am a definite victim of identity fraud and they will do all they can (and cannot) to 'save' me. When I inquired about the caller's location - they said - 'I'm from where you are from' one time and tried to speak to me in Hindi the other time. Makes me think if this scam is now targeting Indians. I have now received 5 calls in 2 days from 3 different callers - all have an American name - John, Mike and Alle.
