I have received 2 or 3 phone calls from a woman claiming to be from the ATO. I was not home when she rang so Mum took the message.
She says her name is Katarina and that she wants to talk to me and wants my Tax File Number. This was the first thing which rang alarm bells for me as of all the institutions which should have access to my TFN its the ATO.
They wanted me to call them back on 1300852232 between 8am and 6pm "central standard time". This was the second time alarm bells rang as I'm pretty sure we work on AEST.
    Dodgy!

    Hi

I just tried to call this number as I was a bit dubious as well. I got a message saying they were from the lost superannuation officer (or something to that effect). I went to the ATO website and used Superseeker to find 4 superannuation accounts where I was listed as lost. I went through the process and now I will be sending off the forms to claim my lost super.

Very easy - give it a go.

Yeah, I got the same call and googled it which brought me to this page.  I didn't call them back but went to the ATO superseeker website and there were 3 super accounts that it found.

Same story, they called for my daughter, wanted her to call back with TFN and date of birth.
So strange, when she did call it seemed very very dody.  I rang ATO and they said 1300852232 was ATO decicated line.
However you should go through the automated process for collecting lost super and avoid this, it just doesn't feel right somehow.

    Hi All,
I too was concerned however, I rang the ATO from the web based contact numbers and also was advised by a Senior Supervisor type that it is in fact a legit campaign to link you with lost super.  You can get the same detail online of the companies and a/c numbers to follow up or call them back!
    Cheers!

I phoned back and it seems legitimate, they didnt need my tax file number and could look up via name and it was to do with lost superannuation.

Same story as everyone else. They called my on a public holiday and left the same kind of message re: central standard time and tax file number needed to confirm identity.

Thanks for the feedback everyone else.

Same story as everyone else - I was called on a public holiday at 12.47pm by someone claiming to be Jessica from the Australian Tax Office, left a message to call 1300852232 and mentioned that I may be required to quote by TFN.

I called the number - the greeting said, welcome to the Australian Tax Office. I was asked by a gentleman for my TFN, but I couldn't remember it. So he asked for some basic identification questions and when he was satisfied that I am who I claim to be, he mentioned that a super fund has contacted the ATO regarding my lost super and gave me the name and contact number for the super fund (I do have an amount of super with the fund from many years ago). He also mentioned that if the amount of lost super is less than $200, it can be withdrawn without any income tax implications.

As with everyone else I was called on the weekend by a Jasmine claiming to be from the ATO and that it was to do with Superannuantion. I didnt want to give out personal details over the phone to someone 'claiming to be from the ATO' so was given a phone number 1300 85 22 32 to ring between 8 - 6pm Mon to Fri. I was dubious and googled the number instead which brought me to this page.
I have read all other entries and think I will go to their web site. Thanks everyone :)

I work for the ATO in the Lost Members Register where we make these calls from. I just had a client return our call thru the call centre and she stated she was very worried that the number was a scam because she said she googled it and the site she found advised it was a scam. Just wanted to let you all know this is not a scam, we are truly from the tax office and that 1300 85 22 32 number is legit. We are trying to reunite taxpayers with possible super. Its a good call so please call us back!

I had a missed call from this number yesterday at 3.30pm with a message the same as everyone else. I returned the call this morning, it's a legit number, nothing dodgy at all. They had found 3 super accounts, gave me heaps of info about how to get it back.

Oh, and the reason they say "Central Standard Time" is because their office is located in Adelaide - I live in the CBD and the lady I was speaking to was saying she was just around the corner on Waymouth Street. Nothing to worry about!

    I got the same voicemail.

The kicker in my case is that I got a voicemail on my Skype account, as I live in Norway at the moment. I guess they must have gotten my Sydney-based Skype Online number from somewhere, but I'm damned sure I never gave it to the ATO.

Bit of a puzzle. They did get my name right.

130-085-2232 is not listed on the ATO website, I call [***] and suggest you do whatever you need to either on the website or by calling a number listed on the website.

Oh well, if "Kate" says she's from the ATO and that it's all legit, then it must be... That's all the proof I need!

I got a call this morning, and wanting my husband to ring them back as he is at work. The caller did not identify himself, and I did not ask his name
My husband has just been through the process of finding all his Super. This process was started with a letter from the ATO.
I rang the ATO and was told that if they ring anyone, they will always give a name and an extension number to ring. The ATO employee is going to pass the number onto his supervisor. I also noticed that the ATO has since gone from 1300 number to a 6 digit 13 number.

My wife has recieved messages to call this number twice in the past 3 months. I've reported it as a scam to the ATO who advised me that the number is NOT registered with them and thanked me for reporting it. If the tax office want to contact you, they will send you a letter as always, they dont phone you!

SCAM! I called the ATO. They only use 6 digit numbers. They also do not call individuals to help them recover lost super. They have a tool on their website to help with this as well as a 6 digit number you can call to recover lost super.

I would say the comments on here claiming this is 'legit" are also part of the scam as the ATO told me this is a scam and to avoid calling the number. They advised me to use their website to find my super or call their lost super line (again, a SIX digit number).

    Call the ATO yourself - 132 861
