Caller ID said Internal Revenue. We picked up and a man with an accent said we had been identified as someone who had committed tax fraud. We didn't give any information but the man was looking for social security numbers. Beware.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

Caller was a female with an accent that sounded Mexican or central America.  Said her name was Michelle and sid I had a tax problem and wanted to know if I was represented by an attorney.  I smelled a rat and said I was busy and would have to call her back.  she gave me her number.  Incident reported to Lubbock, Tx PD.

I got two calls on answering machine saying I had committed IRS fraud and it was urgent that I call them right away...Yeah...sure...male with heavy accent.

I was just called 3 times it was a prerecord message from a man with a heavy indian accent saying he was officer james peterson  and that I was going to be arrested for tax fraud or tax evasion , the caller id was the IRS but the number he gave to call back was 201 234 8577 i contacted the IRS and they do not make phone calls like this and that it is a scam

Ditto Information above....implied immediate arrest if we did not respond to the telephone message. Checked out the telephone numbers given here first before calling. A scam for sure. Messages erased from our answering machine. Thanks for all responders who checked this out before me.

Caller asked for my husband to call him back. Said he was from the IRS.

Same story as related above, called this morning, left a dire message about pending tax fraud, Indian accent.  Said I should call back before I'm taken off to jail.  I don't have caller id but the number they left to call back was 201-234-8577.  The IRS doesn't call you...they send out letters.  This is someone trying to make some money illegally.

THIS IS A TOTAL SCAM! Just as above, I was contacted by a man with a thick Indian accent. He left a message stating that I had committed both tax fraud and tax evasion, and unless contacted immediately the matter would be processed by the federal claim courthouse and I would be placed under arrest. The number that appeared on my caller ID was in fact the number for the IRS 800-829-1040; however, the number that he provided for a return call was 201-234-8577.
Don't be fooled by these losers! According to the IRS website they use a spoofing app which makes the call appear to be from a legitimate source.
