I recieved two calls from this number this a.m.  The first time, they just hung up.  The second, a man on the line rattled off a name and wanted to verify my SSN.  I asked who it was, and he said the same name that I couldn't understand, then I asked who are you with, and he said "TCR".  It was a New Jersey number per my phone.  I called back and a recording said the call would be recorded, then nothing for over two minutes, so I hung up.  I had asked what he wanted, and he said again a whole SSN and address, interrupting me, and over talking me.  I told him I'm not verifying anything til he says who he's with.  He said if I want help, then I have to verify the info.  I said help with what.  He again repeated the info, and then said he needs me to verify it.  I hung up.

These are bottom feeder collection companys that buy bulk old debt for pennies on the dollar.  The continually violate the Fair Debt Collection Act and use an automated system to place calls.  If you are receiving calls from them please be aware that they cannot threaten you, mistreat you, or continually call you.  They cannot send the police after you.  They only thing they can do if file for a judgement against you in your county court, but that is highly unlikely as they have thousands of files and that is just not physically possible for them to send company reps to all the different counties in the areas they collect.  Also, check you state's statue of limitations.  There are laws protecting you from someone trying to collect on very old debt and that limitation starts from the date of last activity on the account.  If you want to settle a valid collection on yourself, try offering them a settlement, say 25 cents on the dollar.  If they won't deal with you and become belligerent on the phone let them know that you are willing to work with them, but if they continue to act like an idiot, they will hear dial tone.  Key rule...just stand your ground and don't be intimidated.  They are trained to make you get emotional and that's what they want.  So don't play the game and remain completely business-like.

Oh, and if you do work a deal with them, send them nothing until you have it in writing signed by an officer of the company.  You also need to have them send to you proof that the outstanding debt is yours.  Something with your signature on it.  The original finance agreement would be perfect.  Chances are they will not be able to do this because they rarely have that.  The offer must state that this settlement will satisy the debt in full and no further collection attempts will occur.  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE YOU TO ALLOW THEM ELECTRONIC ACCESS TO YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT, EVEN WITH AN AGREEMENT.  You will send them a cashier's check or money order and then you need to keep all copies of agreement and check forever.  And again, if they don't like what you are saying, let them eat dial tone.  They are in a volume business, so they will eventually settle for something rather than nothing.

I get constant calls from a rude little [***] named Michael Carp. He looks for some girl and I try to tell him that he is wasting his phone time calling me because I am clearly a man and do not owe him any money.  Yet, he hangs up calls back again and gets even more irate when I remind him that he hung up on my previously when I told him he had the wrong number...

It is enough for me to pop my head into the Constar Arizona office on my next business trip out there, find him and beat an apology out of him.

Caller named Brian Frost called today asking to speak with my father. My husband took the call and asked to take a message. The caller gave him a call back number with an 877 area code. When my husband inqured what it was about the caller informed him that he was governed by the laws of the Federal Trade Comminsion not to disclose the information. The caller than referred to my husband by his name and asked if he would give the message to my dad. He said "I strongly suggest you give him the message" to that threat my husband told the caller he "was shaking in his boots". Mr. Frost ended the conversation by saying he will find another way to get in touch with my father.I *69 and got this number. What's up?

Bad advice on making a deal with the collection company...

If you settle for 25 cents on the dollar.. they now by law have to file with the IRS.. you now owe the IRS income tax on the gifted 75%.. The collection firm doesn't have a leg to stand on.. and you wont either after the IRS rip's yours plumb off your body !!

Have received several calls from this number to my new cell phone number. When I answer their is no one there. Got tired of this harrasment, I called ATT to see what my options were. Either change my number again or pay $4.99 a month to block up to 15 numbers. Chose neither, just will continue not answering these unwanted calls. I know I do not owe any money to anyone so I'm not worried about these a**holes.

I think it is amazing that everyone above is throwing in their two cents about the collection laws, the agency, and the collectors. Here is the bottom line. Dont want to be called? pay your bills! You don't have a law degree....don't give legal advise. It is not the Fair Credit Reporting Act that is violated if you feel harrassed. It is the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. We are in hard times and jobs are hard to come by. These collectors are people who got a job and are trying to do it. Most of them follow the laws. No, I do not work for this company and never have. But I do know the owner, and I know for a fact, that there are strict policies and precedures in place to make sure the employees follow them. It is funny to see those who are not paying their bills, trying to work anything out, and know nothing about the law, are the first to try to educate others as to it. Furthermore, bad mouth those who are trying to do their jobs so they can pay their bills, because of their job responsibilities. Put yourself in their shoes! They have families, bills, rent, etc., and have one of the worst jobs on the planet. Some are very understanding and compassionate. Imagine how hard it is for them to do their jobs. Furthermore, aside for everyone they have to call making them an enemy, they have to deal with people like you bad mouthing them all over the internet. Here's an idea, you can't pay your bills because the economy is bad and you don't have a job? Bill collecting is recession proof. Jobs are always available. Become a bill collector as you picture one should be, get a paycheck, and pay your bills! Then you will not have time to sit on the internet and bad mouth people all day who are trying to do the best with what they have been given. Good luck.

I am dealing with these calls also.  I am in a suit against the people they are trying to collect for (CitiFinancial).  I had received a letter and called them right away...since it was a good thing for my suit  Anyway, I called them back.  (before this I had not received a call from them)  Now I am getting several calls a day from different people.  After the first few calls and telling them I was fighting this and them telling me I cannot fight it I need to pay it to get the calls to stop...I called the original person that I spoke with and he "removed" my number from the call list....(that is yet to be determined.)  Also, while chatting he casually asked questions to get info...I really didnt say....but some of it was info that was OLD and weird...so I asked how he came up with this info and he said "Google search".....also I requested proof from him on this debt...as I need it for Attny.and he stated he had to request from the company....LMAO   good luck with that one.

So...I suggest that before u pay anything make them provide ALLLLL information regarding the debt....then check everything....ie did u sign something stating u would pay....was there other circumstances....

The cannot file against you without proving that you owe!!!!  Make them PROVE it...

I would not want that job for sure!  But some, not all, bill collectors get on a power trip and are pretty dang rude.  Alot of people out there have a choice pay an old bill or their house payment and food.  A collector told a person I know "I am sure you can afford to lose some weight, pay this bill and consider it part of your diet"   OMG!!!

It is the bad ones that ruin it for the good ones.

Don't take any advice on this board that suggests paying any of these companies .....NEVER PAY THESE SCUM OF THE EARTH COLLECTION AGENCIES A DIME. If any of these debts are unsecured credit card debts (which I'm sure they all are), if you pay them anything you are crazy. They can't enforce jack [***]. Recognize the number when it comes in to your phone and simply don't answer it ever again. They quit calling after a short period of time. Sure your credit is ruined but I have the feeling for almost all of you it already is. So what?

Please don't listen to this jack-[***] ........ he's one of the tools calling all you people trying to make you feel guilty into paying back a credit card debt that you were certainly charged 35% interest on monthly.
Screw the credit card companies and their outragous policies.......pay them nothing.
