Scam, trying to pass as the government giving out free grants randomly to people who pay their bills on time and have been randomly selected based on phone number. Said he was calling from Washington, but had a NJ number, and was going to give me a confirmation number after our call and connect me directly to the department of Treasury to collect my money, then mumbled something about needing a visa or mastercard.

This number called my cell and when I said "hello" all I heard was a "beep"

I wouldn't disagree that this is a scam. Especially if they're trying to stick to landlines.

On 9/11/2015 a female with a very soft/mumbling & hard-to-understand accent called my cell phone, saying something I couldn't understand. I told her "I can't understand a single word you've said"...so she repeated more clearly that she was calling from the US Government (???) department". I replied "What Department?"...and she said the "Grant" department...then went on mumbling something about how I'd "get a $9,000 check from the government that I wouldn't have to pay back". I stopped her right there and told her I knew this "was a scam- and that I was hanging up"). These people should be ashamed of themselves if this is the only job they can get in life...they can't even speak the language and they're put on the phone as a SCAM TELEMARKETER...you don't even need a brain to tell to tell they're reading from a script- and that everything about a call like this smells PHONY. By the way, 30 minutes after I'd hung up with THIS one, they called back another cell phone number in my home- perhaps they have the entire cell phone customer listing for Verizon Wireless? How irritating it is to be constantly disturbed by these (almost daily) scammers! What ever happened to the Do Not Call project anyway (which I consider a worthless entity to say the least- since scammers call on both home phone and cell phone numbers- both 'entered' and 'reentered' on the Do Not Call website). It seems that privacy doesn't exist anymore for anyone.
    • Caller: so-called "US Government Grant Department"
    • Call type: Telemarketer

To report the fraud, go here:

Their number is listed , along with an email address, at the top of the page.

Consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so. If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number. For tracfone & straight talk:
