- Sunny replies to jack cooper| 1 replyI had a message on my ansering service by a person with heavy india accent. Said it was IRS and they would begin criminal charges if i did not return the call. Thats strange. I have no idea how the iRS operates, but i higly doubt thats the approach. i returned the call and there was a message with a closing commnet that said Have a Blessed day! Is that how the IRS would sign off?
- Brian McmeansThey said they were the IRS & when I asked why they had an accent they said [***] off sir & hung up
- DougSame thing. IRS scam
- JayThis is an IRS scam. Baboo (Heavy indian accent) barely sounds literate. IRS NEVER initiates communication via phone call. They always start with written communication.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number. - chrisI got the same call its a scam the real irs would sent a sheiff to your door step with no waring with real leagl papers they dont make phone calls

- KarenIRS scam, man with heavy Indian accent claims to be from the crimes and fraud division of the IRS, they will file charges/lawsuit against me if they don't hear from me immediately. Very difficult to understand the message at all, I know it's a scam, but where are they getting our phone numbers from? IRS doesn't use those kind of tactics, they will file a wage garnishment before initiating any other form of legal action. Usually that's sufficient to get a taxpayer's attention! What makes these people so brazen?
- Caller: IRS Tax enforcement scam
- CWG40 replies to SunnyYou're right. Total scam. Originates in either India or Pakistan.

I am an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (inactive). IRS does not file lawsuits. Tax disputes are civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and ask for money. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail. - C. TaylorI just received a call from this number saying they were the IRS and had a criminal case filed against my name. His name was Richard Brown and spoke with a very pronounced Middle Eastern accent. I told him that I would call the IRS and verify the validity before I would speak to them about anything.
- Caller: He claimed the IRS

- Corinne Malanoski| 2 repliesI have received 2 calls from this number and one from253.336.5895 stating criminal action is going to be taken against me from IRS. I know I haven't done anything illegal.
- RexIRS replies to Corinne Malanoski| 1 replyThis is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf).
