I received a recorded call from this number.  It is the same as everyone elses comments - IRS agent Julie Smith, call immediately, etc.  IT IS A SCAM!

I received this call / actually a recorded message this morning from a lady saying that she is from IRS and I should immediately return her call...she also gives a case number/ her agent number...Why I am thinking it is a scam- the caller does not even bother to wait for you to write down the "case" number- if it is an urgent/serious matter for me.why is she in such a hurry.

There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

I got a recorded message at 9:09 am today from this number. Most of the message was cut off so I looked up the number. I'm glad I did as it's clear that it's a scam. Thank you for posting these messages! I did not call the number back.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). Just got a robocall on my voice mail saying that I should return this number or we will take action against me...yeah right.

Caller I.D. 202 241-5504, District of Columbia.  Caller with foreign accent told me that I was in trouble with the I.R. S.  Gave me a telephone number to all immediately, or charges would be made  Caller spoke very fast.  Another scam!!!  

I got the same call from Julie Smith, its a SCAM!!!!

Yep, its a scam. It sure freaked out my wife though.

IRS Scam. I might have believed it if I hadn't already seen it on the TV news.

Got a call from "Officer Gerry Marchand" of IRS. Heavy Indian accent. Not very, very convincing. Said to call. Very, very important. And Muslims eat pork.
