- claire| 2 repliesI received a call and a guy with a very heavy accent claimed to be from the IRS. He said that they are pressing charges against me for a variety of issues including misrepresentation, tax evasion and other gobbledeegook. They said I would be arrested and would have to contact my lawyer to bail me out or they could provide an attorney for me. It scared the crap out of me...even though I should have known better. I checked on line and this is apparently a wide spread scam. They called back but I did not answer. Hang up if you get a call from this number!!!

- CarrieI received a call from a guy with a heavy indian accent saying his name is Jordan Taylor. Basically the same info as above, calling from the "tax department" and that I needed to call back right away to settle this debt. I have owed the IRS in the past and I can assure you, they do not call and warn/threaten you. This has to be a scam.

- samReceived a call from 1-202-241-6147 Washington, D.C.7/10/14 on my machine. We had to listen to the message several times as the male caller had a very heavy accent. He said that he is Officer Jordan Smith from the federal tracking activation department calling about a legal obligation and federal compliance in the state of Florida. He then states our name and threatens us stating that if we did not call back, legal action would be taken against us. For a moment , when we heard our names, it was scary but we immediately looked up the number on this site and read similar stories. Thank you for providing a website to identify scammers.

I plan to continue to d do that for the next several days whenever it's convenient for me. This ties up their lines and bothers them. After a while they don't call back. - Tracy| 1 replyThis guy left a harassing message for my elderly mother-in-law, telling her she was facing legal action unless she paid him money. I called the number back and his outgoing voicemail message says it's the "Crime Investigation Unit of the IRS" but no name, etc. Thank goodness for this website, where I was able to see that this is a scam.
- rex replies to TracyThis is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for this.
Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm
The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone. The scammers use voice over IP lines (e.g. magicjack (Ymax corporation). This is always against these companys' terms of use and can lead to termination of their contract. However only law enforcement can initiate the contact if you yourself are not a customer. Therefore, report it also to your local law enforcement agency. Ultimately this is a case for the FBI legal attache in Islamabad or New Delhi. If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction (and the NSA can finally be a force for good).

Dear Senator/Representative XXX
As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to demand decisive action from the FBI, the IRS and other federal agencies against organized crime directed against American citizens from abroad.
As widely reported by local and national media all across the United States and warned about by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (see http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm) a tidal wave of fraud using Internet phones has hit the United States. Millions of dollars already have been stolen by criminals impersonating federal officers from the IRS while hiding in countries like India and Pakistan, where most of the calls originate. There seems to be no end of it in sight.
I have personally been targeted by these scammers but it is the most vulnerable among us that I am concerned about primarily. The scheme is specifically singling out those that can least defend themselves against these crimes, in particular the elderly. I am also worried that given the origin of these gangsters, the money stolen from US citizens may be used for financing of terrorism or other activities directed against the national interests of the United States. But in spite of this clear and present danger to our country and its citizens I have seen no action worth mentioning by the FBI, the IRS or other federal agencies so far.
As a member of Congress overseeing the law enforcement agencies tasked with fighting fraud and ensuring national security, I implore you to make sure that they act on these threats and are given all the necessary resources to target these criminals in cooperation with foreign law enforcement.
Yours sincerely - richThis guy did the same thing to me and I live in Illinois. He said his name is Officer Gary Smith with the tax services division. I told him to pound sand. Then I told him to show up at my house. I am still waiting for him.
