No need to suspect fraud - per the IRS, it IS fraud.  You can report these losers to the REAL IRS at www.irs.gov.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

It was a recorded message from "Officer Julie Smith from the IRS" wanting a return call to this "IRS Hotline" number so they wouldn't take action...of course it's a scam. I always let the anwering machine screen calls, so most I never answer.

202-241-7215 --- one of the most harassing, intimidating, downright frightening scam calls I have ever received.  These people (all Indian males) will tell you that you owe the IRS back taxes, even if you don't and have never received a letter or communication from the REAL IRS. These people say that you should have an attorney represent you immediately.  The individual I spoke with told me that my employer would be notified, I would lose my job, my bank accounts would be levied, my property seized, my DMV registration taken AND that there were police officers coming to my home within one hour to ARREST ME!!  When I refused to give any more information, he hung up on me.  I called back several times and spoke with FIVE other men who identified themselves as "Officer Blah Blah of the IRS Investigation Department", all trying out the same harassing, intimidating script on me.  These people are scam artists of the lowest, worst kind.  DO NOT LET THEM INTIMIDATE YOU WITH THEIR DISGUSTING SCAM.

202-241-7215 called and left me a message saying the irs is taking action because I owe them $4,000 dollars. Called number back and talked to a heavy accent Indian sounding guy. He first asked for my number then my name. He asked for my lawyers number and name. I said I do not have one and he said irs is taking action against me and the police will be coming to my home or place of business within the hour. So I started to get rude and said irs has to send me a notice he said they did and told me an address that was 5 to 6 years old. Then I said irs my new address and he said did u update it with irs I said yea every year when I file taxes. Then he hung up on me.

This is scary....I got the same call.  Officer Jeff Martin from IRS calling to collect back taxes.  He verified my name and address correctly and said that they can settle out of court If I paid $3,415.00 via Credit Card since I have a lawsuit against me for not paying my taxes.  I told him I have only a check and he can come and get it himself. He hung up and did not call back.

I've received two calls from them.  Same threatening message saying they were with the IRS.  First call, I asked him if he was really with the IRS, he hung up.  I immediately reported the scam to the IRS and the FTC.  The second call came late last week and it was a woman.  Same message and at the end said "and have a blessed day."  Just to shake her up, I returned her call from my office.  When she coudnl't match my phone number to any name ,and I said I was calling from my office at the US Attorneys office.  Slam.
