Total Scam, they id themselves as the IRS and ask for your taxpayer ID# and demand 1/2 of all back taxes otherwise they won't set up a payment arrangement. When I told them I would go in person to the IRS office a few blocks away from my work, they told me the local office couldn't help me and that I would have to deal with them.

Then I asked for him to give me information which he did but then he told me if I didn't meet their obligations I would be thrown in jail. I told them to come get me and hung up!

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

SCAM. Contact your local FBI if you are contacted by this number. They have no affiliation with the IRS and are convicts preying on unsuspecting people.

Was really freaked out by this. I did tell them the last 4 digits of my social security number. I hope this doesn't do something bad to me. I asked for this guy's supervisor, then he hung up.

I first got a call that only said "Good-bye" in an automated voice so I called the number back. He asked if I had a lawyer and I asked what was this about, I haven't received a letter from the IRS. When I refused to give him my tax ID number, he asked for the last four digits and I refused. He hung up. I called back and asked his name and ID number. He gave me his "American" name, Shane Watford. I asked for his ID number again and he hung up, so I called back. He hung up without even saying hello. I am steaming mad! I will report them as suggested below and since my husband works got the FBI, I will certainly tell him about it too.

Received called today on my landline and it went to voice mail.  Message said they were from IRS and we needed to call them back before actions were started against us.  Left the number on voice mail.  Message was muffled but it sounded like last name was Smith.  Could be wrong though.  I looked the number up on the internet and it said it was a scam.  Therefore, I will not be calling them back.

Just received a call from this number stating it was an officer for the IRS stating that if I did not pay I could go to Federal prison for years and all my possessions would be seized. This is not the first time they have called. Please just ignore these calls. The IRS does not make phone calls.  Just for a laugh I called the number back and was answered with Hello IRS. I have called the IRS and this is not how they answer It starts ot with a prompt directing you to where your call should be directed.

Ironically,   most of the calls that I make to Customer Services,  particularly AT&T   the US.gov,   are often hard for me to understand because of the accent in their English.  Although most are speaking good quality English,  the accents makes it difficult.  I'm not advocating against anyone,  because most are very nice and try to be helpful,   but I am just telling it like it is.

You are correct.   And after you call the Gov.  and spend eternity listening and trying to figure out which option to take,  you are put on infinite hold.  When I need to call the .Gov people,  I usually get a book,  alarm clock  and pack a lunch.
