- In TexasThe standard computer-voiced "Julie Smith from the IRS" scam...
- LS| 1 replyParents received a voice-mail at their house saying it was Agent Julie or Judy from IRS. Saying they needed to talk to the person at this residence or their attorney and to call them back at the hotline number 202-241-7351 and repeated the number. My mother called they and they asked for a case number and she didn't have one so they asked for the phone number that was called. After which they said they were calling for me. She told him I didn't live there and he said ok and hung up without asking anything farther.

- RexIRS replies to LSThis is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). - Caller: IRS
- IrritatedThis automated recording called me 2x within 3 hours of each other. The automated voice says its Julie Smith from the IRS.
It's so irritating that these people keep calling. We are on don't call list. I don't think that works.
Enough is enough - NorcalThey do not get very creative- Agent Julie Smith from IRS was the automated recording. The second time you call the hotline number 202-241-7351, a person with a thick accent picks up. He will ask you if you want him to read an affidavit to you for the charges against you. They will also produce a bogus case number. They may put you on hold once or twice. He will threaten you that a sheriff will come to your door tonight and serve a warrant...Then he will offer togelp you-SCAM. Do not give them any more information about you.
When I asked for a local IRS office, they said I could not go in because local offices were just notified. At each turn, they may try to steer you to ask them to handle it with them on the phone, but will not produce anything traceable.
SCAM.
Do not give them any more information about you. - jimReceived 2 calls from a Julie Smith from the IRS. She said to call back right away or they will file charges.
