This call came in with a heavy accent, possibly from India.  They claimed to be the IRS.  When I asked them to send something in the mail, they hung up on me.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

I just got a similar call from 2022418003. A badly modulated robot voice claiming to be an agent of the irs announced that there was some sort of issue with my father's taxes. I called the number back and it clicked over to India, I believe, where a man with an Indian accent told me there was some sort of lien on my father's taxes. They don't know this, but my father died last week and I know for a fact that his taxes are in good order.  This clown on the phone spoke terrible English and was stuttering but trying to sound authoritative at the same time, so I told him he was full of b.s. and I hung up on him. Another site I went on a little while ago said that this number was on some sort of internet relay that sends it out of the country. I wonder, should I report it?

Got a message on my voice mail from a woman stating her name was Julie from the IRS and that I needed to call her back ASAP and if I didn't they would take action against me. I did not call back for I have seen the warnings on the news about this number. Tried to leave a message with the true IRS but their mailbox was full.

This morning (26-Nov-14 at 7:36 am eastern time), I received a voice message from 202-241-8003 claiming to be an IRS representative.  When I called back 202-241-8003, the person with heavy accent told me I that owed the IRS money.  When I requested that he provides his full contact information for me to be able to verify his claim with IRS, he cursed me and hang-up the phone.

Received a robo-call from 202-241-8003 at 8:48 AM EST on 11/27/2014 (Thanksgiving!).  Quality of the call was not that great, but the recording said it was from the IRS and I needed to call this number back before they take action against me.  They ended the call by saying to "Take Care", or something like that.

They just called my mother's house and I caught the message. Saw the posts on here and so I knew it was a scam. I called back, recording the call. The man spoke terrible english, but gave me VERY exact information, including the address, my parent's names and the last 4 of their SSN. He gave detailed information of the years of taxes audited and the amount owed, even knowing some details about their employment, etc. Other than his horrific accent and the fact the IRS ALWAYS sends information through the mail, he sounded pretty legit. When I asked for information to be mailed he claimed that it had been sent but no one was here. When it became clear I doubted him, the man started threatening that bank accounts would be seized, their house taken, they would be "blacklisted" for employment and eventually he moved on to the sheriff would be here within 30 minutes to "haul you away in handcuffs and throw you behind bars", promising me that we could read the letter from the IRS then. I asked for him name and stated that I was recording the call and then he got VERY angry, nasty, profane, and then slammed down his phone. I reported the call to the IRS complete with the recording. Scary how much information he had.

My mother got a call from this number, she let it go to voicemail, the recorded message was from "Julie" and said the same message as the rest. I called them from my phone, and the man had a deep accent, he said it was the IRS, he wanted to know what number they called and the name. I insisted on getting an 800 number from the IRS, and he said he will be able to call me back from an 800 number, again I asked him to give me the 800 number to the IRS, apparently he got upset, because he said "[***] you" and hung up...He won't scam my family.
