- WA State resident| 2 repliesAutomated voice message from a "Julie Smith" purporting to be from the IRS advising I better call them back at her direct line (which she gives and is the same as the caller ID) before they take legal action against me. Does not ask for or verify my name and ends with "Take Care". I have never received any snail mail from the IRS and do not have any delinquent tax issues.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so. - RexIRS replies to WA State residentThis is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

I see there have been many warnings about this scam and I have used all the links provided to report the number but wow...very unsettling message. The creepy "take care" at the end really makes it sound much more threatening. I just worry how my older parents would handle a message like that. Really makes me angry.

- SandiReceived two calls from "Officer Julie Smith from the IRS ." One was from a 415 area code last week, and the one today was from 202-241-8193 (I mail taxes to San Francisco which has a 415 area code.) I called back the 415 number and it rang and rang. I called the 202 number today and got a foreign sounding person asking me the number I was calling from. I asked why I was receiving the calls and what they wanted. He told me it was the fraud department of the IRS and they are investigating tax fraud. I told him I didn't believe him and he told me for me to get in touch with my legal representative and prepare myself! I hung up on him!

- LouieGot a call from 202-800-8193. With an automated voicemail that said: This is the final time the IRS will try to reach me. And that I need to call them back at the same number and fix my IRS issues that I have. I don't have any issues with the IRS. I researched this number on google and many other people got a similar call. This is a fraud call. Ignore them!!!
