Confirmed fraud attempt (IRS script). This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). Claiming to be the IRS.  They left me a voicemail saying it's urgent and if I don't return the call, they will seek legal action.

I got a call as well and I played along. I was taking to David Miller and he transferred me to Brian Smith who told me that I need to get 8,986.73 in cash and go to the nearest gas station to get the paypal card and then give them the number. They basically are looking for the numbers on the card so that it is not traceable. They also have a women working with them who comes at the end and tell you to not talk while you are in the store. While I had fun playing with them this can be very scary for people who are not aware of such scams. I also got another number from them (2022390065) and when I called the number it said Magic Jack customer is not available.

Got a verbal message and called back at 9:30pm. It is a fraud. Be careful this number :202-241-8440

Thanks for posting these information. CPA filed my TR and I never owed tax. Just for fun to call this number (202-241-8440)

I received this call with a lady's voice saying that this is IRS final notice,and I am to call 202 241 8440 to get case file information. I did not call that number because I know IRS never call people at their telephone.

I received the call this morning at 6:20am but it went to voice mail. They claimed they were the IRS, they were suing me and that I needed to call back. I didn't call back since I knew it was a scam.

Thank you all for posting.  We just received the same phone call on our home phone and I immediately searched the number that was left on the voice mail.  However, here's the twist, the number that called in was my cell phone number, and no I wasn't calling my home from my cell phone!  I was actually on the phone with Comcast with another issue when the call beeped in, I reported the spoofed number calling my home as it was happening.  How they have that number is beyond me, and my name was on the caller ID.  These people are crooks, scammers and just the lowest form of humanity.  

I received  2 calls today from and unknown number and was left a message stating that the IRS will be suing me for a mistake made on my taxes. I don't owe any taxes but they demanded money within the next hour and stated that if they didt receive it they would see me in court

omg thank you so much for all this info.  I am already paying back taxes and this Indian jerk  did have me somewhat unnerved.  Once I started to question him though, he hung up on me so I decided to google the phone number.. So glad I did! thank you for posting this info, its given me peace of mind!

I received a call that I have been waiting for for a LOOOOONG time .(NOT)  IThe call was stating "This is my final notice to from the i.r.s. (They used small letters)  about the lawsuit they were filing....."

It's a scam.  I am behind on my taxes and they are in the works,BUT this call unnerved me.  I tried multiple times to reply but got the msg. "this call cannot be completed as dialed..."./ When I did connect the mans english was so broken that I became suspicious and questioned him about the call msg.  He hung up!

We've been audited before and new that the iris does not call....we had a good laugh. Don't fall for the threat, it's definitely a fraud.

Got a voice message saying IRS has filed a lawsuit against me. Ask me to call 202-241-8440 immediately.  It's news to me that IRS would file a lawsuit first (IRS always sends a letter first to taxpayers, listing the questions/issues and asking for response).  Which IRS does these guys work for? Indian Revenue Service?

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.

I received this samw recorded call with a lady's voice saying that this is IRS final notice, and I was to call 202 241 8440 to get case file information.  The lady spoke unaccented English.  I did not call that number because I recognized it as a scam.  The originating phone number was 888-234-6786.
