Received the following suspected spam voicemail message on home landline:

"The music IRS filing a lawsuit against you to get more information about this case file. Please call immediately on our department number 202-470-0740 repeat 202-470-0740 thank you."

I had the same message on my home land line today.

I also got a call from the "IRS" today stating they had filed a law suit against me.  I am suspicious because 12 minutes later I got a call from the IRS Tax Audit Department stating the same thing, only in scarier terms.  Both were computer voices.

I got the same message on my land line. I'm north of Atlanta. Guessing it's spam.

I just got the same exact electronic message and googled the number.

Found these comments.  IRS wouldn't be filing a "lawsuit" without prior warning.  Should be reported.

Automated message saying the IRS was filing a law suit against me and to call back. I called back and there was no answer.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

I got the same call today.  Saw a news report on this.  Scam!! IRS does not call!!

Got this call a few minutes ago And decided to look it up. I got the same computer voice that many others got claiming  the whole IRS scam. If they call back again I'm not answerin it.

I got the same message. Called back twice. Man picked up second call and had a heavy foreign accent, he stated he was from the IRS all supervisors had left and he could not access my file cause system was shut down. He gave the address that he was located in Washington DC. He said I needed to call back Monday between 9am-5pm est to get information on this. I never received a letter. I could hear many voices in the background of people talking. I asked why he answered the phone if closed and he just kept telling me to call back. It is very concerning seeing he had my full name and address. The number came thru my caller id as a local number not in service.

no I do not want my name used. I got this call on my home phone saying that i was being sued to call back.

This is definitely a scam.  IRS uses postal service & they never ask for your information.

i got a phone call saying this was the irs and filling a lawsuit the irs  doesnt call and threated you over the phone  this is the biggest scam i seen dont give in to them

Received a phone call threatening a lawsuit and to call 202-470-0740.   Did a little searching on the net and it shows as a Verizon land line in Washington, DC. The DC Yellow pages show no business listed under this number. Does any agency ever catch and punish these evil people? I wish they could.

got a call from this same number stating that I had a lawsuit against me for almost 4,000 dllrs hell no, I thought it was kind of fishy so I called my accountant and he said, that the IRS never calles they send letters in the mail for you to sign, im glad I went with my instinct. I have kids I cant afford to give up my money to scammers....

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.
