A robo call on June 9 2014 from a Heather who claimed to be an IRS professional.  Warned that unless called back, the IRS would take action against us.  Grammar was not correct.  Slight accent, but not identifiable. Received a second call following up today Jun 10, wording was more threatening.

Hi- Just received a similar call from the same number. Absolute scam- sounded Indian (I'm indian myself, so I can spot an indian accent very well). They are aggressive and use "sheriff will arrive at your doorstep" in the evening threat intermittently when they don't have an answer to your question about the details of the amount you owe the IRS etc.

This is some coward hiding behind a magicJack device plugged in at some God-forsaken corner of the world where there is Internet service.  He's no better than a common criminal using a magicJack device and your fear the same way a common thief uses a toy pistol hidden in the pocket of his overcoat to make a bulge that looks like a real gun.

You can verify that this is a magicJack number by searching for it at http://www.phonevalidator.com .

This scam has been extensively researched at
http://www.pindropsecurity.com/consumer-fraud ... irs-phone-scam/ and it was found that magicJack numbers are frequently used, and many of the scammers are operating out of India.  There is even an audio recording of a call returned to one of these numbers and a written transcript of the recording contained in links from the Pindrop Security blog.

MagicJacks are readily obtainable outside of the United States for about $100 US and can come with up to a year of free calling to the U.S. and Canada.  In India, see, for example,
    http://magicjack.in .
So it doesn't take long to turn a profit, even if only 0.1% of the people they call are stupid enough to believe the scammers.

In addition to the regular reporting channels, e.g., the Department of the Treasury, the FTC, and/or your local state attorney general's office, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp.  This is a fully-owned subsidiary of the company that sells magicJacks.  YMAX Corp. is in charge of assigning telephone numbers to magicJack devices.  I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.

The YMAX Corp. main web page is at:
    http://www.ymaxcorp.com
and their site giving information on how to lodge a complaint is at:
    http://www.ymaxcorp.com/contact.html

Note that the "contact" website gives a clickable link to a "live chat" where you can make your complaint.

Message received Tuesday, 6/12 at 10:27 am PT. from robocall- computer generated voice- identifying as Officer Heather Gray from Internal Revenue Service.

Message truncated on answer machine, "...or your retained attorney of record to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time-sensitive. I'm Officer Heather Gray from Internal Revenue Service. The hotline to my division is 202-506-8031. I repeat, it's. Don't disregard this message and do return the call before we take any legal allegation against you. Goodbye and take care."

The automated came from 202-506-8502 and the voice was in English (sounded American) with absolutely no accent. Gave a call back number of 202-506-8031. I called that number and a male answered with a heavy, barely understandable accent I thought sounded like Pakistani. He said he was calling from the IRS and asked for my wife and I snapped for what? His information was too readily available, like right at his finger tips and that is not right. He proceeded to tell me that she was in violation of a revenue law and and a tax law with no explanations. I questioned that, not to politely. He said two registered letters were sent and notes were left in my mailbox and the letters were returned to them. I told him I received no such letters and he started getting aggravated. I told him I could hardly understand what he was saying due to his accent and he said "i'll speak slowly" and began repeating his message telling me to have my lawyer contact them. I told him I didn't have a lawyer, just send another letter and I will determine if I need a lawyer. He then proceeded to tell me that if I ( suddenly it is me instead of my wife) did not comply to these demands that I would incarcerated until I  was brought to trial.  That is a third world procedure. I ask when I could expect the new letter and he said two days and I hung up. In reading this comment simply look at the errors committed and remember that should the IRS ever call you it is because you are in contact with then already on some sort of abnormality and the first thing they do is tell you their name and give you their agent I.D. number. The IRS will notify you by registered mail, not phone, of any pending activities involving you and an IRS problem. They will not give you any information without first verifying who you are; through a long process and even then they refuse to discuss someone's information with you regardless of who you are. They do not talk about Lawyers, they use the term Attorney if necessary to use it at all.
