got a message on home phone line that sounded like an automated message (like a robot) - said it was agent so and so from the IRS and that I needed to call asap...called and it sounded like a phone center...the woman answered "Internal Revenue Service" and asked me for the phone number I was calling from...when i told her she said they were looking for someone by the name of ..(my son's name).  I told her that is my 16 year old son in high school. She apologized and said they must have the wrong person and that was it...not sure if it was a scam but I would guess it is

I am in northern va and just got this call as well from 202-506-8063 and the message was fairly distorted especially when it came to the reason for the call but implied it was the IRS and warned that the call should not be disregarded.  Also feel it is a scam and I do not plan to call back.

I got a call from a alleged Heather Grey from the IRS in a robotic female voice saying I need to call them back before they take "LEGAL ALLEGATION" against me.... I thought that was funny!

Got a call from this number today claiming to be an Urgent message from IRS.  Called it, but seemed like a scam.  No reference number left in the original voice mail only the Deputy.  When I called back they didn't let me speak to the deputy, just asked for the phone number they called.  When I said this sounds like a scam, they hung up.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

Received a call this morning (06/16/2014) from the same number. It was a Indian guy calling with a Spanish name, Jose something. Threatened me with arrest in next few hours for unpaid taxes and deportation. When I told him that I dont live in US anymore and the last 4 digits of SSN that he is telling me don't match mine, he basically said that seems like some mistake and that he is making all my records "clean" and I shouldn't face any problems anymore. And then he hung up. I spoke to my CPA and he told me that its a fraud.

These scammer contacted my aunt. She contacted an attorney who called the number, they hung up. This was terrible it completely stressed her out both her and her husband have cancer and didn't need this kind of stress. How dare they!!

These persons calling are not IRS just phishing for what they can get from unassuming hard working people. I suggest you call them back and annoy them. They always say they're the investigation unit of IRS dont fall for it.

I got the exact same recording.  It was obviously not the real IRS.  They wouldn't be calling from a cell phone in Wash.DC for one thing!  And they wouldn't be using a recorded message like a telemarketer for another!

Recorded message. said it was IRS and that time was of the essence and I should call back immediately b4 further action was taken by the IRS ]against me (although my name was never used).

The IRS does not call.  They mail letters.  This is a scam coming  from India.  Do not bother to return their call.  Alfalfa & Tamianth have offered good advice for this number.

Yesterday received voice message from agent Heather Grey from IRS, stating not to ignore this call. I called asking for Heather Grey, he said she is in a meeting. the male named Tim Brooks asked for reference number. I said I didn't know. then asked for phone number. I gave the phone number then he went into a whole script about there is an legal action against us about tax violation and tax fraud for tax season 2007 thru 2012. that we are going to be arrested and to hire a criminal attorney. It was a pretty big script which made me angry and scared. I told the person I will call my lawyer and tax preparer and will call you to discuss this. and I stopped the call. If this kind of stuff got me scared, how would this stuff get someone who is older and alone. they would end up giving all kinds of info to the person. it was interesting that he did not ask for any account info from me, but just read his script to get me further involved. These people need to be caught and prosecuted, preying on older and scared individuals.
