I got a call from  someone who said they were an officer from the IRS. She said her name was Mary Thompson and the call was time sensitive. She said to call back right away before they took legal action.

I received a message on 8/7/2014 from Mary Thompson too. I instantly looked it up, to see if it was a scam . From 202-506-9774 PHONE NUMBER ON CALLER ID FROM WASHINGTON DC

Same here. I received a message on 8/12/2014 from "Mary Thompson, IRS". I did a reverse phone number lookup on the Web. The phone was located in Wash., DC, and a map showed the location as just North of the Capitol building.

April 2014 through July, over approximately 4 month period of time, I received calls from "the Official US Government Awards Office", telling me to call back to claim my funds. They were always live and had foreign accents, would say a sentence and then ask, "OK?", as if they were insecure that they were communicating. I told them repeatedly that I was not interested, never to call me again, that I would call the FBI next time they called and then the last time I told them I'm calling the FBI. I haven't heard from that group since.

I received a call from this number as well.  After researching and finding the posts here, I know now that this is another scam that is going around.  Sad & pathetic.  The people involved should be ashamed of themselves!

I got a call from  someone who said they were an officer from the IRS and gave a badge number. He said his name was Kevin  and the call was time sensitive. He said  to call back right away before they took legal action. When I called back, Kevin was very short and wanted my personal info...I said why would you want my personal information if you already have it when I did my taxes? Than Kevin got very upset, told me to shut up and to expect a police officer within one hour to pick me up for not answering his questions. These people are so bad, they can really hurt someone emotionally or someone who can have health problems, scaring them with this lies. Do Not call back.

They're seriously so annoying, this is the second time they called from that number, claiming to be a IRS officer and that they will take legal action against me, etc, every time i call back their answering machine says that they're not available and leave a message, then says their voice mail is full, I tried calling back the other day, just randomly, and they did answer but hung up on me.....

I got the same call to my cell phone on August 28, 2014 where a computer generated voice claimed it was Mary Thompson from the IRS and that I should return the call immediately or that legal action would be taken against me. I phone them from my work phone and asked where I was calling.  I could hear a lot of (non-English) talking in the background and the caller hung up on me.  I called back and no one would answer.

I got the same message on my phone and when I called back they had my name and my previous address and said I owe irs 3700 dollars from 2008 and 2009 taxes and if I can pay today they will not send it to court and they gave me 1 1/2 hours to collect the money and send it from a grocery store they will let me know about when I'm ready with the money then I will pay it in the court to avoid a legal action that they will take against me and I might go to jail for that.
I looked up the number and called irs they said they never do that.

Be advised that this is a FRAUD. There are NO "officers" in IRS Investigations. The number is a YMAX Carrier Landline in BELTSVILLE, MD.

They made the Mistake of calling an old FRAUD INVESTIGATOR for 35 Years on his Private Line.  The Atlanta Regional Offices of the FBI and IRS Investigations have been Notified, and are looking into it.

If you receive a call from these Jokers, Ignore it. It is a Scheme designed to Frighten you into sending these FRAUDSTERS money.

    >>> The number is a YMAX Carrier Landline in BELTSVILLE, MD. <<<

That almost ALWAYS means that it's coming from a magicJack, and that the caller may be anywhere in the world that has Internet service.

Here is a story from FOX 13, Tampa Bay, Florida about these calls.  It's the best explanation I've found so far of these calls as well as what to do when you receive one and to whom to report the call and how:

    http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/story/26206940/2014/08/05/phone-scam

Before you report such a call, make sure you include your phone number, the caller's phone number, the exact time and date you received the call, and check a source like http://www.phonevalidator.com to see whether the call came from YMAX Communications and report that, too.  This is all information that may allow the call to be traced and the source of the threats identified.  It may also create a big surprise for the scammers because YMAX can permanently disable a magicJack for violating the terms of use for their service.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general).

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
