Some sources on the internet say that this number can be used to check if your phone number is tapped. Did anyone try it? Is it true?

Found this number the other night, by reading the article stating it was a way to check if your phone is tapped. Call the number, if you get a consistant tone your good, if it's broken up or glitchy then you could be tapped. Called on the phone i had suspicions about, and the tone was glitched, cutting in and out, static... Needless to say it was a little alarming. I then called the number from a friend's new phone she had gotten activated that day, and the tone was clear and crystal. Called back on the first phone, still very glitchy and static filled.

I wanted to know how legitimate this number was, and if it was really true about whether or not it meant your phone was tapped.

Discovered that the area code of the number (202) is the area code of Washington DC.  Also, go Google that number, that area code used with literally hundreds of variations of numbers have been reknown for "telemarketing", calls with no one on the other end, apparent democratic party campaign use... People have gotten calls from this number with offers of financial help with no follow through, leaving them convinced they were scammed.

But why would numbers from the government that have the same zipcode as the whitehouse be calling people on their CELL PHONES with scams?

And why the hell would a number meant to determine if your phone is tapped be released by the Government?

Anyone else think this is weird?

the government probably wants to see who THINKS they're phones are being tapped and then they'll tap you if you call it (to find out why you would think your being tapped--ie crime etc).  Very sinister and evil. The government does NOT care for your personal rights.

I was having echos on my line and static and lots of trouble with connections.  So it occurred to me that maybe there was an outside reason for this so I inquired search engine for phone tapping possibility. I Dialed the number and the tone was shaky and broken the first time and a constant tone for 10 seconds the second time.  I too think that this is a ploy to ensnare the unsuspecting slightly paranoid individual by getting them to voluntarily dial a number thereby putting them on a list somewhere for future surveilance.  I'm afraid that they will be very bored listening to my phone calls but more power to them for such a valiant effort at catching idiots like me.

202 is indeed a DC area code.. but it's not a [removed:lang] telemarketer area code. anyone who lives in DC has this area code. ANYONE, not just the president, not just the FBI, anyone. This number is probably a [removed:lang] fax machine. Congratulations, you've lost the game of life.

This number is legit for the purposes claimed....but it is used by linemen to check if the phone line they are testing is a secured line. Th 202 area code is D.C. , thats only because ALL phone lines in the United States must be able to dial the Capital. It is not designed for the CIA , FBI or any other law enforcement agency to check to see if the landline they are using is secure...So simply put , yes it will tell you if some "guy off the street" is tapping your phone line or anyone elses line that on that junction box but it will not tell you if a legal tap has been issued....The officials may be lax on some of their security measures but I can promise you they are not going to advertise a number to call that could blow their cover....Use a neighbors landline and see if they also have the same problem....if so call the phone company they will also tell you if there is an illegal tap on your line.....If you are worried that law enforcement is doing it....STOP doing what your doing !

Not so sure its a lure or a helpful preventative measure either.kind of a gamble in a way.But it should be tested on multiple phones to get a better idea because a brand new phone reguardless, may have have different reactions than a used phone tapped or not....Sceptical who has provided this to say the least yet, possibly accurate then again.
