- Captain RickI received a call from 202 591-1618 for the owner of the property. She said that the Government Treasury had a claim against me and I should call this number. She spoke with a deep accent and it was hard to understand her. She said her name was Carana Giubbs I think. I;m sure this is a scam....
- Caller: Government Treasury
- drcarla1| 1 replyI got a call from this number, regarding "an enforcement action by the US Treasury. Ignoring this will be an additional 2nd attempt to avoid an initial appearance before a magistrate judge or the grand jury for a federal criminal offense." This was for "unfiled taxes" for the years 2012 and 2013. The call from last month came from 202-821-1155, a now non-working number.
- RexIRS replies to StevenThis is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). Invest in a call blocker for your land line. $39 on amazon or ebay.
My call blocker stops all calls from area code 202. Too simple.- Caller: Telemarketer
- Call type: Telemarketer
- Natman replies to drcarla1I got the same message and when I told them I'll have my cpa call them they hung up
- Rich replies to GregT| 1 replyYou do realize that you are blocking the entire area of DC right? 202 is the legitimate area code for DC. If i blocked it my sister couldn't call me. me giving any kind of advice if you have no clue what you're talking about
- Gunnar replies to RichGood call blockers & call blocking apps. will have the ability to allow certain numbers through from blocked area codes. Sometimes called "White lists". I have several area codes blocked on my personal phones. 202 is definitely one of them. The people I want to speak to from DC are entered in to those "White lists". All other calls from that area code go straight to VM. When recognized as fraudulent, a callers number will go on a "Black list". Meaning that the call will be refused & will not even go to VM. Basically the caller will be immediately hung up on.
Call blockers are indispensable. Frauds & scammers hate them. Real people can no longer live without them.
Be Safe. Be Aware.
Gunnar - StephanieI got a call from this number. US Treasury serious action! Sounds like a scam!
