- Mark C| 1 replyLast year my 77 year old mother had problems with the IRS because someone had stolen her personal information and filed fake tax forms. My mother spent a couple of hours on the phone with the IRS and got it all straightened out.
The other day she received the following message on her answering machine. It was a computer generate voice and seemed to have originated over VOIP.
“This call is given to you by legal affairs at the US Department of Treasury that is Internal Revenue Service. We were trying to reach you in regard to important issues this past months and months. We have legal affidavit concerning tax fraud on your name. The direct line division to reach us at is 202-599-9674. I repeat 202-599-9674. Don't disregard this message and do return the call. If for any reason you are busy to call us back we would suggest you have your retained attorney to do for you. (unintelligible word) in calling us back might end up in to legal mess for you. Further we will be forced to contact local authorities and register this case against you. So hope you justify in this matter as quick as possible. Thanks.”
Aside from the deplorable English, this sounded like a SCAM from the word go. However, that didn't stop my mother from worrying about the whole IRS problem happening again this year. Luckily, I'm living with her right now and was able to research the number to find out that it was a SCAM! - Mark C replies to Mark CJust reported this number to the Federal Trade Commission.

The IRS does not care if people are imitating them. They are lazy and hold all the money, power and selfishness the rest of the US government has over the citizens that work as slaves for it. 83% of Americans want illegal aliens gone and the IRS is shoveling our money to them. The IRS hate Americans.
- BigA replies to jacomikeSpoken like a true Ignorant person. The IRS is losing money to these scams, and in the amounts of money paid to fraudulent tax returns. Why would they not care about that? I mean your whole argument is about the money right?
- BridesMomCalled back the number left by the "computerized" voice (the same as MarkC quoted). Could barely understand the 1st gentleman's English. He told me he was Detective Kevin Smith with IRS. He had my name and phone number, but just my house number but no street...he wanted me to verify the street I lived on and when I wouldn't he hung up. I called back again to see if I'd get the same person or another person. Another man answered with very poor English told me he was Detective XXXX Brown. Also said legal actions are being taken against me (after he had put me on hold a couple of times) because of fraud in filing my tax return between the years of 2008 thru 2012. He would not narrow down the year. I asked him to please speak slower because I could not understand him (a lot of background noise and very bad English) and he got more irritated. Told me to expect law enforcement to show up at my door tomorrow morning and be prepared to be arrested and to hire a good criminal lawyer. Even gave me dates of notices that they had mailed to me . . . which I, in turn, said I don't recall those notices. . . he said that wasn't their problem. I told him that I had already paid a large sum to the IRS with this year's filing and he came back with he didn't care what I'd already paid the IRS that I had (quoted a sum of over $2,000) for fraudulent filing in the previous years. After going back and forth for a couple of minutes with me trying to pin down more information and not giving up any personal information, he hung up on me. It appears that somehow these people have gotten hold of people who have had previous IRS issues (my accountant found his own mistake and we sent in an amended form with payment). Just more evidence of even if they have a little bit of information about you - don't volunteer anything. If it's the IRS, they will know everything and you won't have to volunteer any information.
