Woman with Indian or Pakistani accent left a long message that she was calling from legal affairs of the Department of the Treasury, IRS in Washington, DC regarding fraud and gave the call back number of 202-657-6533.  She went so far as to say that certified letters have been ignored for months.  She went on to say "Don't disregard this message and do call or have your attorney call.  Delay in calling back can result in a legal mess for you."  Legal MESS?  She went on to say that if I didn't call back they would contact the local authorities.  At least she didn't say I'd be arrested.  I'm sure that if I call the number back I would get someone overseas threatening to have me arrested if I didn't send them money immediately.  They have also used 360-216-1915 in their calls as well.  The IRS has issued a warning about these scams on their website.  The IRS never calls or emails and if they contact you, it is by regular mail and not certified or registered mail.  Bottom line is don't answer any numbers you don't recognize, and don't call these scammers back.  Some are dangling the "you have a refund" carrot to get your bank information instead of "you can be arrested" message.  I listed this call as a telemarketer because there's no SCAM category.

I had that exact experience as the above person yesterday!!  I googled it and the number came up as a legal  firm in Wahington DC..   I have a friend that works for thw IRS  and she assures me that it is a scam!!!  I thoufht it was a bit scetchy  whe he told me that I could not talk to anyone about it for legal reasons!!! He even went so far as to give me a name, badge number and IRS employee number.  His name is Sean Parker  (he has a really thick accent. That should have tipped me off.) Badge#407861 and IRS employee number 9719..

WOW! I also, got a message from this number. I called back and they said it was "IRS". Than the person gave me BADGE  and IRS employee #.  I already knew where he was going to get. So I allowed him to continue with his scam  till he asked for $92.000. lol. One more scam out there.

Wow, Christina!  $92,000!  I'm surprised they didn't say that the IRS owes you that much to get you to call back to get your bank information.
Well, they called me again at 5:35 so they made it to my block list on my Panasonic phone.

Besides posting about the scam calls here, we should put this information on Facebook and any other social media sites to get the word out to everyone we know.  If you tell the scammer that you called the IRS and you don't owe anything, they'll say it was a mistake and hang up.

Love it! What a load off my mind. What with Tax season upon us!! - Thanks to everyone for input

On 2.27.15 we received two calls from the #202-657-6733 with the same messages as listed previously.  We did not answer the phone thinking this might be someone soliciting funds for political reasons.  Upon listening to the voice message left by the female caller with middle eastern accent, we assumed this is a scam.   We googled the phone # to see others have experienced the same threats.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.

IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and ask for money. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

Ignore them and block their calls.  They use area code 202 on their spoof numbers to make it seem like some sort of official call.
