Guy with accent claiming to be from IRS and that they were initiating a lawsuit against me. I've never had trouble with the IRS before so it seemed unlikely that this call was legitimate.

Phone call telling me to call 202-684-6378 came in at 1:45 AM.  My caller ID listed the actual number as 875-593-9471 which phone lookup states is:

Female Voice left a message on the answering machine...no accent...but authoritative.
Did not address  by name..just said to call the phone number..being investigated by the IRS for
possible legal action against me...as soon as I heard that.. I knew it was a SCAM!

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:

1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances - amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://m.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-centr ... mmission-320427). Happened to me right now. He said his name was David Graham and that I owed 4,000 from 2008. I googled the number and found out this post.

Got a message on my answering machine from a phone # 466-652-7632, telling me she is from the IRS and that I should call back the above number, 202-684-6378, regarding the lawsuit that the IRS is filing against me.  Obviously I freaked out, as I wasn't aware of this scam.  When I called back today, a lady claiming to be Michelle Olson from the IRS told me that due to an audit and my miscalculation in my filing of taxes for the years 2008-2013 a lawsuit was filed and a local IRS authority will be showing up at my door to seize my drivers license, my property and bank accounts.  When I kept on repeating that I have no idea what she's talking about and never received any notice from the IRS, she hung up or we got disconnected.  When I called both my accountant and lawyer, they reassured me it was only a scam.  Doing an online search of the phone #, I came across this website, which further reassured me that it was a total scam, so I am breathing again!!

Had a message from some woman saying the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me, and I needed to call this number.  Although I was sure it was a scam, reading the other messages really set my heart at ease.

Received phone message from this number.  I called as I have been audited.  Individual provided id numbers, etc., claimed I owed a lot of money for tax fraud and that there was a warrant issued to arrest me, and that it was a five year jail term for tax fraud.  Individual said this was a confidential call and that I was not to discuss with anyone if I wanted to resolve this issue without going to jail.  Wanted me to pay immediately and to go to ATM machine and withdraw money.  At that point I went online and searched for this number and saw the postings.  I called my CPA and left a message from my desk hone.  I then asked for the local IRS office number in Detroit and claimed that I was going there immediately to resolve this issue.  Individual claimed that I was in violation of this agreement and that I would be arrested within 45 minutes and that my credit was now damaged as I discussed this topic with another individual.

I just received a call from this number as well.  With the same issue claiming to be from the IRS and filing a lawsuit.

Left a message on my voicemail claiming to be the IRS. I knew it wasn't real!

I got a message to return call so I did 10 times and didn't say anything to them when they answered. Maybe if we all just keep calling them back and hanging up on them it might slow them down.

I just received a voicemail from 875-893-8944.  it was a horribly automated message of a woman's voice saying that the IRS has been trying to reach me and is filing a lawsuit against me.  Says I need to call 202) 684-6378 immediately.  

Definietely a Scam.

I received the call about 10 minutes ago.  Caller id claimed that it was from Toronto.  I figured it was telemarketing so I answered for fun.  It was a siri-like female recording saying that the IRS was initiating a law suit against me and that I needed to call back for more information.  I called back (using *67 to block my number) and the call wouldn't go through.  So I called back again using the fake caller-id s/w on my cell phone and some mid-east accent guy answered.  I told him I received a call and was curious what it was about.  He said it was IRS blah blah blah.  I asked why he was scamming people.  He gave me some IRS line again.  I then calmly said "we know that's not true, but I'm curious why you're scamming people."  He actually said, "off the record, I don't normally answer those questions but I'll be honest.  Our group needs money."  I asked "what group".  He said al-qaida.  I asked him why he would support them and he claimed that he was one of them.  I was beginning to ask another question when the call died at 2min.  I don't know if he hung up or if the free caller-id faking software limits calls to two minutes.  Anyhow, that was my fun for the day....

I just got off the phone with a guy who says he is an officer from the IRS. An officer?, I said "there are no officers in the IRS". He says, "well what do you call it, AGENT". I said "yes, and let me have your agent number", he replied, "I do not have an agent number". I asked him for information related to my account without giving account numbers, he told me what address and phone number listed for me, of which is all correct. Now how the hell do any of these people get this information? I asked "where is he located?" He simply replied, "Pakistan". I then said that he is full of s%*t that the IRS is not located in any other country other than USA. It is formed and organized in the USA and there are 2 main branches in the USA. He then says, "pay your bill in support of the Al-Qaida". At that point my blood started boiling, I then told him he was High and he isn't getting sh*t from me. He then says, "I already have" and hung up.
Knowing they have my address, phone number, what's next? I am concerned now and so should you, don't give any information and report what you can. I plan on calling my provider, #AT&T and let them know of this situation and what precautions can be made.

Just received one when I go home from work today.  It seemed very real and I am concerned that I gave them the last 4 numbers of my social security.  Any advice....Scared in Silver Spring, MD
