    Feeling foolish
A female robo message was left on my home phone saying, "Hello,  this is the IRS, a lawsuit is being filed against you. This is our last attempt to contact you. To get more information on this case file, please call us back at 202-684-6469."

I was super confused because I hadn't received any phone call, letter, etc. prior to this phone call. I called them back for more info. It rang about 15x then a woman with an Eastern Indian accent picked up & said her badge # was AV450 (she even waited for me to get a pen- how nice) & stated my name, home phone # & street address (to verify she had the right person) & then said I owed $1247.00 in personal back taxes from the years 2008-2013.  Then said if you do not pay this, you will be taken to jail for a 72-hour period, license suspended, blah blah blah.

Honestly, typing it all out now, it's such an obvious scam, but in the moment -my emotions clouded my judgement- & I believed them. I was furious at the thought of someone coming to my house & handcuffing me- I flew off the handle demanding she give a due date. She said "today" which set me off more. She then transferred me to her supervisor "Christopher" (also from India) who told me I could be arrested within 30mins. When I asked why I hadn't received anything in the mail, he said something about the County Commissioner not wanting the sensitive material to be opened by someone else- to which I told him that was bullsh!t. He told me to watch my tone & language, I was speaking to a Federal Officer- I hung up.

Did some research & found this is indeed a scam. The IRS WILL ALWAYS try to contact you first by mail. (Usually registered or certified where you have to sign for it). And they always give you the opportunity to dispute the charges by a deadline.

I feel so stupid for falling for such an obvious scam and letting them get me so upset. SO glad they did not get any info (or $) from me! I pray for these people that they feel God's fire of conviction upon their hearts & stop doing this.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

THE SAME THING JUAT HAPPENED TO ME. Exactly how you explained it. It was for my mom but I said she didn't speak English so I would have to translate. They said my mom could be arrested if I hung because the govt thinks we are "fleeing" or trying to escape from the problem. My mom kept saying she wasn't going to pay and I was freaking out because we were both freaking out for the amount "she owed" ($2,489). We didn't have the money so they were nice enough to give her time to run to my uncles house and ask for the money borrowed. We asked for payment options if we couldn't get the total amount and he said we could get a minimum of $1500 and pay the rest later as a whole. My mom was freaking out and was going to go to my uncles house. As she left I had to stay on the line because I couldn't hang up or they would arrest my mom the next day by a state trooper around 12-1 pm. He told me that when she went with whoever was going to lend her money, she could say anything about what it was for because it was govt information,to sau it was for "medical emergiences,or whatever but not for IRS payment". She left and I stayed on the line because i couldnt hang up or she would be arrested. Then he started asking me questions like what I was studying for and my birthday, he told me his birthday and he was 26 not married and single then asked if I had a boyfriend (scaming and trying to hit on me! People are gross) He said we would be bestfriends, and he hoped to comw to texas one day if the govt transferred him.
Then my mom was smart enough to go to the police and they called me, I told them what happened and they said my mom would be okay and they would have to notify us first if there was an arrest. They also said the IRS never asks for cash. She looked up the number on Google and told me it was indeed a scam. So great way to end a Monday huh?!
Here are the number so you guys can be aware
They leave a automated message with the #202-684-6469. I called and at first they didn't answer but I called around 12 so my mom said it was lunch. I called back and they answered. The first guys name I can't remeber but he transfered me to "Michael Kennedy" (both Indian,hmmmmmm...yet I didn't realize it was a scam).
"Michael" also gave me a direct line which was 253-292-6083.  And to get them the money TODAY we needed to go to a Walmart or CVS and buy a "Federal Volcher". The police said it was basically a money order they just gave it a fancy name. The cops told me to hang up and when I did,oh wow,my best friend "Michael" called me back.
Well I hope this helps you guys.

I got the same phone call - claiming that I was being sued by the IRS. I called back but got a recording from a woman with what seems to be a British accent saying no one was available to take my call. Thank you for clarifying - - I will not call them back again.

Same experience here.  I also get one from "Federal Agent Jonathon Knight" who has an extremely heavy Indian accent.  I will be purchasing a FOG HORN to place by my phone and I will be BLASTING THEIR EAR DRUMS each time they call.  PLEASE CALL ME when I am home!

2026846469  beware of these criminals. Stated IRS was suing us over fraudulent unpaid taxes. REALLY! To begin with IRS would not call to inform any one about a lawsuit. They will always contact by mail. These idiots are not rocket scientist but don't give them any advantage. Report these criminals.

    It,s A Scam (Beware)
I didn't recognize the number, so I didn't answer it. Instead they left a voice mail replying that they been trying to reach me and I owe the I.R.S and that they were filing a law suit against me and I needed to call 202-684-6469. So, I tried to called the number back and got no answer. I decided to google the number and found out this was definitely a scam. I.R.S. will not call you, instead they will contact you by mail. When the robotic voice mention I.R.S., you could tell by how the language was broken up.

Was called this morning and had the same experience as other callers. They stated that we were being sued by the IRS and needed to call the 202-684-6469 phone number to get any further information. Declined to call after investigating the phone number here on your site.

same scenario here, my son answered one day and blew my phone up at work FREAKING out!  i laughed, (not at him) that it is illegal debt collection to leave private information on a voice mail that anyone can hear.  also, it was from "Internal Revenue Services".  I asked him when government agencies became plural. 3 voice mails, 3 different numbers.  2 came up as new york locations, one with a 202 are code but the real IRS has local and 800 numbers (to soften the blow from an audit or owing?)

I received a call from 202-684-6469 it was IRS with this being our final notification of a lawsuit being filed.  I called the number and a Indian guy named Shawn Griffin answered.  I felt funny about the call and asked his address he gave me 1111 3rd Floor Constitution Avenue NW Washington 20066.  I told him I wasn't giving him information he was asking and he threatened me saying the police would be at my house in 30 minutes to handcuff me.  While I'm speaking to this guy I'm googling that phone number and found this page with everyone saying it's a scam so I told him that and he quit speaking period.  He didn't hang up but I kept saying hello until I hung up.  I called the number right back and got the same guy.  When I told him I just spoke with him and he was trying to scam me he hung up.

We also got a call, but I knew it was a scam because I know the IRS does not operate that way.  I still called back the number and he said his name was Mark Smith from the IRS.  I said I'm returning his call.  He asked or my number but I said I was confused why he called and asked him if this is really the IRS as in Internal Revenue Service.  He said it was and needed my number.  I then said he called me and if he was really from the IRS he should know my number.  He then hung up on me.

Two minutes later I called back.  Another person answered.  I asked for Mark Smith.  He then transferred me to Mark Smith (something the IRS never does in that way).  Mark then came on the line and asked me who I was and my phone number.  I didn't answer, instead I said we were just talking a few minutes ago and "We must have been disconnected".  He said he remembered and then asked again for my name I made up a name of Frank and made up a bunch of random numbers for a phone number.  I made up more numbers that a typical phone number and then he looked it up and hung up on me again.

It's a scam, but I had fun scamming them back and wasted their time.  It's sad, but calling them back and playing dumb can be an interesting way to have some fun.  Try it but don't give them a real name or number.  You never know what they will do next.

    Tired of it...
Received a voicemail stating the same as all of you... they are filing a lawsuit call them back at the same number. "Mark Smith" answered with the "Internal Revenue Service". He had my name however could not pronounce it correctly and my address. I said you are with the IRS? Well then when did you send written correspondence? I should have received that first. He said I will be disconnecting this call and an agent will be coming to your address to explain it all to you. Thank you for calling back. I said, will that be the normal 30 minute timeframe? And all I heard was click. Due to the high call volume of prank reporting at the actual IRS number of 1-800-366-44840 you can also send your impersonation to the website at tigta.gov and there is an area for impersonationscan.gov. Even if you did not send money you can report the incident. I just did. They have enough of my personal information to be concerned. I also just called my grandma for her to be aware. Older ones may not know how the IRS contacts you and will fall for this unfortunately.
