Caller identified herself as the IRS, said it was my final call, (said they had been trying to reach me, although I received no prior calls or messages), did not use my name, said IRS was filing a lawsuit against me, and that I should call the above number for further info.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

I just received the same call from them and said I was going to report them as scam.

Got a call today from someone identifying themselves as IRS, from 202 697-9197, saying this was the final notice before filing lawsuit.

Message was left on our answering machine.  We did not answer or respond.

202-697-9197 called me around 10:45 am on Friday, June 12th 2015 with a voice recording stating I was being sued by the IRS.  I called back and couldn't understand the guy and I asked for someone without an accent so I could understand them better and he got all mad saying "NO NO NO NO NO" repeatedly.  I just hung up.  Obviously a scam.

Received a recorded phone call stating that it was the IRS and they were filing a lawsuit against me, that I needed to call this number back 202 697-9197 right away.  I did not call back right away, looked up the phone # online and it stated it was a scam.

I just received a call from the same number with the same threat. Happy there is a forum to report.

Just got a call stating it was the IRS filing a lawsuit against me. Stated they had been trying to reach me (not true) and to call back now giving the same number from which they called. I looked up the number and did not return the call. "Final notice" they said. I don't like threats. Scammers are the lowest of the low.

called on my cell #.  left a message to call.  looked up to see what # this was and saw it is some type of scam.  these scams are just getting out of hand.

Computer called saying the IRS was going to sue me.. Called on Sunday afternoon.. Googled it and saw it was a scam. Was asked to call 202-697-9197. I did not call.

Same number called me. Final notice before suing. I called back no answer.

Just got a telephone recording  that said we were being sued by the IRS and to call 202 697 9197.   Not!

I just received this same call with the exact message that was posted earlier.  The call came in but looked like an overseas call.  I answered since my husband is currently working overseas.  I have a friend that works at the IRS and says that they will send written notification several times and file tax liens.  Rarely do you receive a phone call since most people can not be found except by last known addresses on tax returns or employment records.

I just received the same call from the same number 202-697-9197. Said the IRS is filing a lawsuit against me.

Received a threatening call from 202-697-9197 on June 15, 2015 from a person who claimed that he was from the IRS.  The called had a thick accent and threatened court action against me unless I immediately paid $4000 in back taxes.  He also claimed that the local police department would come to my door and arrest me.   I told him that any contact needed to be in writing.   Of course, I don't owe
any money for any back taxes because I always track any tax obligations very carefully.  Note that this caller was very unpleasant and threatening.

6/16 caller left voice message about a lawsuit but no name or number.  A call back rang 30 times before a machine pickup. I checked several reverse directories and got differing results including Hyattsville, MD and US Dept of Commerce. This is a scam by foriegn scumbags.
