I received a phone call first from a 202 621 5429 telling me that I had been picked by the US Government to receive a $7000 grant, then to call a 202 697 9244 on how get this grant. They asked my person information such as age and address, that I have been 1 of 1,700 people across the country chosen for this grant and how to get this grant is through a Western Union or Walmart. I have read that these messages are scams over the passed year and a half. There needs to have a stop put to these type of calls and these numbers due to bad business and ripping off ethical people that they call.

I received the same call as "Nick A" regarding a $7k grant, chosen from 1700 people "because I pay my bills and taxes" the the initial call came from 202-231-4382
Supposed to send me $7k CASH by mail, I just have to call the manager to have the cash released.  202-697-9422

Same message exactly. I don't have caller ID, so I don't have the number that called. They had my name and address and wanted an Visa or bank account number. I chose the cash option because I don't believe 'my government' is giving away money. I was to call 202-697-9244 to release my money. I didn't make that call.

I just received the same call from 202-321-4382, advising that I had been selected out of a number of Americans in the US to receive this special grant money that you don't have to pay back and to call the account manager (Ken Williams) to confirm - 202-697-9244. I received this same call about 4 years ago and when I called back the number I was informed that I had to got Walmart and purchase one of the pre-paid VISA card add $500 to the card and then call them with the credit card number for them to add the $7,000 to it. Having a keen since of a scam artist, I knew better than to do something like that.  This is a scam, if all of my telephone numbers are on the Do Not Call list, how come I'm still receiving these calls.

    Glad you recognized the scam!

    >> if all of my telephone numbers are on the Do Not Call list, how come I'm still receiving these calls. <<

This post has two parts.  The =second= is for people who are interested in the realities of the Do Not Call list.  The =first= is for people who have difficulty understanding long explanations, but think the DNC list does not work.

    1)
The DNC list is not a magic switch attached to your phone.

The DNC list is intended to help stop calls from legitimate telemarketers.
    * Your calls were not from legitimate telemarketers.
    * Therefore, the DNC list will not stop those calls.

    2)
The DNC list does not automatically block calls.  Instead, it provides a list of  "do not call" phone numbers to legitimate, registered telemarketers who pay a fee for the list.

The DNC list exempts political callers, survey organizations,  charities and companies with preexisting business relationships, but these organizations might have their own, internal Do Not Call list (ask them).

The DNC list is not effective against criminals, spammers and scammers, because those people do not subscribe to the DNC list, and do not care if you are on or off that list.
Its purpose is to stop calls from legitimate telemarketers, and it does a pretty good job at that.  Just think ... if there were no DNC, you would be receiving incessant calls from BOTH legitimate and scam telemarketing callers!

    Here is your reading assignment:
    https://www.donotcall.gov/
    http://www.ftc.gov/news-events/media-resource ... try/enforcement
    http://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases ... lemarketers-pay

Remember, the Do Not Call site is a good one to report unwanted calls from LEGITIMATE telemarketers.  The DNC list does not cover calls from criminal scammers & spammers.  To report those, visit https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

If you receive calls even after reporting them (and waiting a sufficient time), then you should consider using a call blocker app, device or service as your first line of defense.  Google "call blocker" to see such things at Amazon or other sites.

    >>  Who knows? <<

    Things to believe:

    • There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.
    • If it sounds (or looks) too good to be true, it probably is.
    • You have not won big bucks from a benign benefactor, a pot of pesos from PCH, dinero from a doctor, or a grant from a gracious government   <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
    • The tooth fairy really does not exist
    • Everything you read on the internet is not necessarily true.
    • It is illegal to ask for money for a loan or prize, before awarding the loan or prize!
    • "Free Trips" are loaded with mandatory & costly extras, and you usually must give them your card number after listening to a loooong spiel at a hotel.
    • Microsoft or one of their agents did NOT cold call you to fix your computer.
    • The moon is not made of green cheese.
    • The IRS will snailmail you, rather than phone you, if there is a problem.
    • Jackalope milk is not an aphrodisiac.
    • If you "green dot", MoneyGram or Western Union money to a scammer, the money is gone.
    • You should beware of Greeks bearing gifts, specially if the gift is a wooden horse.

More information on those scams (and others) may be found at

Remember to return here, to 800notes.com, after you look at any of the information at that site, either to post more information, or to let us know you avoided the scam.

I was given the exact name, Max Williams, and the same number, 2026979244. He told me that I had been picked along with 1700 other people in our area to receive $7,000.00 and all I had to do was wire a $310.00 deposit and they would wire me back $7,310.00 within 10 to 15 minutes. This is the 6th call in a month! I asked him what department of the government this was coming from and he said Health and Human Services. I didn't even let the last guy finish his spiel, I flat out told him, "This is a scam." And he hung up on me.
