This number first called my number. A native indian male speaker claimed I was involved in a court case with the federal treasury and that I needed to call this number back to speak with a David Chambers. I called and a guy who sounds the same as the guy who just called me answered now pretending to be david chambers. He started talking about some court case and something I need to do involving my financials.

I told him his business didn't seem legitimate, and if he was involved in the government why have I not received any letters or emails. he asked for this information, which I refused him. The government would have this information if he was legitimate. I told him I will be looking for letters or emails from the federal treasury and if it was important he could find me that way.

I believe this was a scam.

I too have received a call EXACTLY as described by the previous post. I too told them I never received any official letters from the government. He threatened jail time of 3 years, wages garnishment and several other sanctions. I didn't give private information to him and he hung up. I have since blocked the number to my phone.

This number dialed me and hung up and I called it back and they answered "treasury dept" and then proceeded to tell me that there were warrants out for my arrest and that they were going to throw me in jail for 3 days and the. Take me to court and put me in prison for three years.
What is really strange is that a couple of hour later, got a call with a Georgia area code that could not be called back to and stating that they were with Microsoft and my computer had been hacked and I SWEAR that it sounded like the same Indian person as the treasury guy. ?????  He wanted me to let him into my computer so he could fix it.  Really????

Randy you could be very well correct.   The same boiler room call centers in India are making both IRS,  Microsoft, as well as debt collections scam calls.   I had one call claiming to be Microsoft call on a 202 number and a couple of days later some clown that sounded like Ghandi or Jajesh Koothrapoli called claiming to be the IRS,  using the same 202 number  demanding that I settle my tax obligation...then and now.

I also got today a call from the same number. A guy with an Indian accent left me a voicemail. He said he was from US Dept of Legal matters and I had to call him back in regards to a legal matter or otherwise I would have to face the consequences. I have not received a single letter concerning such matter. I have no intentions of calling him back. It seems a scam.

Prior to that call, I got a call from Atlanta, Georgia from 440-777-4567 asking to call them back immediately from someone who also seem like a scammer. No reason given.

Last week, I got a call from an unlisted phone number from an Indian guy claiming to work for Microsoft. He indicated that my computer was sending error messages to their servers. (I had to laugh about this one because I had not used my computer in at least five months in a row) When I told him that, he hung up on me.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:
