claims to be from the IRS calling about a tax lean.  you are told to call back but leaves no phone number.  this is the caller id number.  caller has a foreign accent

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:

1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances - amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://m.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-centr ... mmission-320427). [***] [***] called me and seriously tried to start [***] claiming i should get my lawyer.u dont even know my name and you want to talk to my lawyer...[***] off!! .im not dumb and uneducated like half the people from this [***]'s country of origin (whatever hell that may be) so I called them back incessantly for a whole day..prolly called 50 times and just said "[***] you [***]" each time to these dumbass.they didnt know what to do cuz I was actin all crazy and asking them questions.. and after a Whitney blocked me or changed the number ...and now its back in service cuz they just called again..guess they couldnt get enough..oh well I can waste their time too hehe im home sick today.. Could half understand what he said - said he needed to get info from me on my criminal attorney because I had an affidavit against my name. I told him I wasn't giving any info over the phone, if he had something for me he could mail it to my house and I hung up. He called my house 3 times in one day starting at 7:28 in the morning.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

My husband just got a call like this today and was freaking out - but thankfully for this forum we realize it's a scam!  Thank you all for your info.

Received a call today.  I figured this was a scam as the IRS would not leave a lengthy message of this sort.  Thanks for having this forum.  Very important to know about.  Will report to stop scam.

Received two calls that were left on my voice mail.  Sounded Indian; the woman very upset almost yelling, telling me to have my attorney call back that I was in serious trouble with the IRS.  Called 2 days in a row, same time. I hope no one falls for this, especially the elderly who don't have access to a computer.  

Claimed to be from the IRS.  I called back and spoke with an Pakistan accented fellow.  I finally said "you're not even from the United States"  He must have been new cause he admitted it and hung up.  Moron!
