As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). https://800notes.com/forum/ta-a9526ebadc65cf9 ... 558497927242748 - Peter LuckThe call I received stated this was a "final warning" for a lawsuit being filed by the Internal Revenue "Services". Knowing that the word "Services" is not a plural in the official title I decided to check on the net first. Am I ever glad that I did! I found the many complaints against ths unkonwn phone number. I also noted that for a formal legal action to be taken it ought to be mailed to me and not phoned in.
- Caller: Internal Revenue Services
- AlvaroYes, this is a scam. For me they said an arrest warrant had been issued. When they could not answer as to why this was elevated to such a sever level I became suspicious and told them I wanted to call back and reach them through the known IRS 800#. After being on hold for 40 mins I spoke with a real agent who confirmed the scam. Those thieves will pay a large price when karma comes around.
- Caller: Faux IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- IQMAJOR SCAM!!, PLEASE CALL TO REPORT IT TO TIGTA AT 800- 366-4484
- BlackwellAmanda Washington (deep Indian accent) called to inform me that I owed $5000 worth of back taxes. I didn't give her any information. I hung up and Googled the number she called from and got all kinds of information about a scam. So I called her back to question her about it and she hung up on me!!
- dlyiteI received an automated call informing me that the IRS" "was going to file lawsuit against me" !
Obviously a fraud.- Caller: Claimed ot be I.R.S
- Call type: Debt collector
- KirkI got a voice mail from this supposed number 202-864-1136 caller ID just showed "unknown name Private number". It was a female robovoice that claimed to be from the IRS (they said Internal Revenue Services not "service") and that this was the "Final Notice" and the IRS was filing a Lawsuit. To get the file information they wanted me to call the 202-864-1136 number. Chyeah right. The whole thing is filled with flags its a scam.
1) The IRS doesn't blind call you and if they did call their caller ID better identify the number as being the IRS and not "Unknown Name Private Number". The IRS uses the USPS mail service. It would also probably be a certified letter, or Something that had to be signed by addressee. If it were a true "lawsuit" more likely I would have been "served" in person
2) Since when is a very first call a "Final Notice". "we have been trying to reach you" is not a valid claim. How had they been trying to reach me? By phone only? Can't be if this was the first call I received from them. A final notice should be the third or forth time not the FIRST.
3) If the IRS did call it would be a real person not a robovoice.- Caller: Unknown Name Private Number
- mary schiazzaThis is a scam.

- Lou MI got the same robo-voice telling me about a Final Notice of a lawsuit from the IRS and to call the 202-864-1136 number. The comical part of the call was the incomming caller-id number has a 204 area code (Manatoba, CA). Umm, yeah, the IRS is now located in Canada!! C'mon, you can do better than that!!
