Caller I.D. read  "Washington, D.C".     Sounded like an automated call, slight foreign accent, male.  'Said they were from the Internal Revenue Service.     Instructed me to call my attorney immediately when I hung up .... and that's when I hung up the phone.    BLOCKED.

Recording from a foreign male. Says from IRS, extremely time sensitive to have a lawyer contact them. If we don't, he can only wish us luck as the situation unfolds. It is to laugh. Obviously since it's just after the 15th a tax scam. They called back 22 minutes later probably expecting an answer after hearing the message and being scared haha, NOT SCARED! I know the IRS never calls about anything like this. Man sounded like another that has called about another scam, a lottery BS scam. Said he was Mr. Washington. Funny thing is when the # is called back, it rings and rings, then a skip sound in a 5th ring as it's redirected somewhere else and rings 8x then a busy signal. If it were real and so important, why not answer?

Caller is says "District of Columbia". These idiots are calling me for several days now..Here is summary of what I got so far.  AT first couple of calls he claimed I have problem with my last year tax. I just received my this year's tax return so no problem is confirmed.. Once I picked up the phone and he says his agent number is bla bla bla he is from IRS (then explained what IRS stands for). When I asked  him what is matter he gave a me other number to call and find out and said that he does not now as he is very low level employee.(that is funny to me_as IRS would have lower level "caller only" employees now).
Now same guy same accent leaves message that he has all the proof of serious case against me and I have to call hm to resolve other wise he will report to police..This message is extremely important. Call me the second you get the call.Do not disregard this call.I have your address and your social security number. If I don't hear from you or your attorney only thing I can tell you is  good luck. Case will go to your local police  and you will be hand cuffed.

The caller from 202 864 1166 left me messages 5 different times on teh same day to my home number. There is a case against me which matches with my address, name and SS #, it is important to call otherwise it will be transfered to local police and I may be arrested.

Pure scam.  The IRS always contacts you via US Postal Service unless you have called them and asked for a call back.  They also never threaten arrest.  I bet you if you actually talked with them that they would want you to pay your "tax liability" using an untraceable payment method such as one of those prepaid money cards.  No government agency at any level accepts that form of payment.

Received a call from (234) 304-5930 on Thursday, October 9, 2014. This number is located in Ohio.
Computer voicemail stated, "This is the final call from the IRS. The IRS will be filing a lawsuit against you. Please call (202) 864-1166."

I called (202) 864-1166 to follow up and a guy with an Indian accent answered the phone, "IRS Agent Smith." I hung up on him.

Got a call from 284-306-5730 telling me that I had a warrant for my arrest to please call this other number 202-864-1166.  When I call they told me that I owe the IRS $14,000.00 of taxes and If I didn't make a payment immediately the cops were on their way to arrest me.  I hang up the phone and called the cops to make a complaint.  I called the number back and told them to kiss my a**!!!!!!

a woman's voice, slightly urgent and intimidating advising me this was the final time the IRS would contact me, and that if I did not return the call I  would be sued. pretty funny because that was the first message I had received!  called the number back eventually and got an Indian-accented male voice with all kinds of "office" background noise answering "Good morning this is Kevin from the IRS how may I help you?"  I hung up

I got two messages on my phone from 7172015276 and 9305663631 (ID showed) saying" This is an official final notice, ... IRS the Internal Revenue Service has filed a lawsuit against you... to get more info for this lawsuit... please call immediate 2028641166." I took more than 30 mins to call real IRS #:18008291040 and IRS asked me to report the scam to www.tigta.gov IRS impersonation scam reporting. She asked me to track down the number who called me. This is a serious Federal crime.
I called 2028641166, first time the answer machine states it is a headquarter of IRS and asks me to leave a message. I called second time, a man with strong Indian accent claimed to be Jack Smith with his IRS ID 4551 answered my phone.

Received a call on my cell phone today stating that this was the final official attempt by the IRS to contact me before filing a lawsuit against me.  The call came from 714.201.1246 but asked that I call 201.864.1166.  Since I pay my taxes on time, I checked the IRS log and reported it as a scam to TIGTA.gov.

Same experience as the previous four people, except that the calls came from a blocked number. One call said to call 202-864-1166 and the other to call 202-864-1298. I have just posted a complaint with TIGTA.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:

    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances - amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://m.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-centr ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

Got this message.  The IRS does not harrass people like that.  If something is wrong with your taxes they send you US mail first notifying you of a problem then sending later notices if you do not respond.  They do NOT call you on the phone without formally contacting you by mail of prior problems.
