Possible RBC - Trying to sell some sort of identify theft protection from a Carolson inc.

Received a call on 15 July 11 @ 9AM local - answered, but no one on the other end.

Received a call today, July 15, 2011, at around 8:40 pm. Woman supposedly from RBC went on and on about trying to sell me insurance for my Visa (for my family and myself) and even my Blackberry! Either these people are getting creative or they are very privy to the things we own. Asked for me by name. She sounded like she was reading something scripted and often made me think that I was listening to a recorded message. When I FINALLY got a word in ("No") she said, "I understand how it feels to give so much information over the phone," (gives me a forced laugh to, I'm sure, calm my suspecting nerves). Whenever I receive phone calls from RBC, it always says RBC on the Caller I.D. and this was some weird number. She insisted twice for me to relax, which isn't right. Don't be fooled. Hang up, or don't answer at all. Do not fall for these scams. I can't do much to warn anyone, but I can at least do this.

Called today in the morning.  Didnt leave a message.  Never in 6 six at RBC have I gotten a call from a non 800/888 etc number.

I had a missed call on my cell from this number.  They left a message saying it was from RBC Visa security department.  They gave me a reference number and instructed me to call the number on the back of my Visa card.  When I called, they asked about three recent charges on my account, totalling about $1300 in authorizations.  None of these charges were by me.  They told me I had no liability for fraud on my account, then closed my account down and mailed me a new card.  The legitimate balance from my card will be transferred to the new card, while the fraud transactions won't.

So it turns out that 204-289-0964 is actually a legitimate outbound number for RBC Visa.

That being said, if you get a call from an unrecognized number regarding your Visa, do not discuss your account with them.  Simply ask for a reference number, politely hang up, and call the number on the back of your card.  It may take a few minutes to connect you to the right person/department, but at least that way you can be sure you are in contact with your real credit card provider.

The only incoming calls you should treat as secure are from numbers that appear on official documents/websites of your credit card provider.

Received a call from this number yesterday & today, first a man & then a lady, asking for my husband by name. Said they're from the Royal Bank & that they'll call back. I don't want them to call back & wish to put a stop to this.

Received a call this morning 10:10 , didn't answer the call and there was no message after.
reading posts here, i assume it was RBC as I have visa card with them!

I just got a call from this number,but I did not answer it,as I never pick up the phone from an  area code or phone number outside of my province,unless I really know who it is.

I just received a call from this #. I ignored it and they didn't leave a message. Is this really an RBC #? Why wouldn't they leave a message if its important.

Just received a call from (204) 289-0964. A lady asked "Is this First Lastname?" I said yes, the lady replied with a thank you and hung up. WTF ? Are they probing me for personal details and building a profile on me so they sound more legit on the next call ?
Next time I'm asked from an unknown number if this is so and so I'll make sure to first ask who they are.

Just ignored a call from this number, and no VM was left.  It's a new number every day and every number I look up on this site is RBC-related.

Ditto, get calls from various provinces. No message. All rbc related. Tired  of this crap.

Here is the response I got from RBC's customer service themselves:

"Hello Jason,

My name is [removed_name], and thank you for using our Online Banking message centre.

I have taken a look at the phone numbers below and entered them into our data base. Non of the numbers below belong to us, and are more than likely a telemarketer company of some form or another. If one of these phone numbers have used the RBC Brand it is more than likely a scam .One type of scam involves unauthorized persons who use variations of the RBC brand and logo ( or another company) to add credibility to a fraudulent scheme.

If you have been victimized by such fraud schemes, please contact Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501 or email info@phonebusters.com. Phone Busters is a division of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). For victims who reside in the U.S., please contact local authorities and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) at 1-877-438-4338 in addition to contacting Phone Busters."

Received a call from this number today, offering identity theft protection if I provided all my identification information on behalf of RBC. Was told that I could not receive information via my online account messaging center, only over the phone.Clearly a scam.

I got calls from this number too.. the thing is that if I am not familiar with the number I do not answer them.
My motto is if you do not leave me a message on my mail box it means it is not important... Just an advise, it will save you from all telemarketers or possible scams.

I received a call from a "Hannah Dohler" claiming they were calling from RBC and asking for my husband.  When he took the call, he was told they were from Samtel Solutions and stood there listening to a what sounded like a recording until he put it on speaker so I could hear what was being said and I commented, then she "appeared" to be live again.  She was offering insurance for all credit cards, debit card and cell phone.  She wanted to confirm our postal code.  As soon as he heard that, he knew something was up because if they were calling from RBC or someone affiliated with them, they should have all of our information already.

My husband tried to confirm with RBC after hanging up with "Samtel" and not providing any information to them.  Unfortunately, no-one at RBC could help him nor could they confirm who Samtel was.

In looking up this number, he found this site and pretty much confirmed that the phone call was a scam.  RBC would always identify themselves and would have a number that you could confirm was theirs.  The one thing that he did notice checking this page was that everyone was receiving calls from these people, it seemed, after the work day is complete or on the weekends, when you can't reach anybody at these companies to confirm the information your being told!

Beware and be cautious.

Just submitted a complaint about this number to the government "do not call" list. Reported as scam and am wondering how they are still operating, to begin with.

If it continues, I will also report them to law enforcement.

I received a call from this number the other day and thought it must have been from the government because i own my own business.  So today I answered the phone from a 403 456 6015 number and it was the same thing, some scam in trying to offer me protection for family, credit cards, cell phone.. well i'm sorry.. if someone steals my credit cards, they are going to be right out of luck because they are all maxed and as far as my cell phone, it will be cut off when it reaches 300 dollars.  Don't answer these calls, it's a waste of your time and obviously theirs
