There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.
USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

    Educational post:
That scam is described as scam #11, at
    http://phonehelp.2truth.com/facts_rev.html

Remember to return here, to 800notes.com, after you look at any of the information at that site, either to post more information, or to let us know you avoided the scam, or to read any further information about that number that others may post.

I too received a call from this number.  It sounded like someone from India.  Claimed to be an agent from the IRS fraud division.  Threatened with handcuffs and arrest.

    Tooo Funny
Sounded Indian. Lots of static on the line. Said IRS had an arrest warrant on my physical address and to call him back right away.
It just made my day. I was able to relief all my stress with the laugh I got from this call.
So now the IRS is going to call you before they come arrest you.
Well that's just fine by me. I'm a big guy and I need plenty of warning so I can tun away.
    Thumbs up to this site!!!
    Great work!!!

Got a call while at work, couldn't pick it up and the caller left a message... sounded genuine on the phone like true cop like aggressive man telling me that the reason why he was calling was because they have an arrest warrant for me and that my property was also at risk. To call him back urgently, that this was very serious business. About 3hrs later I received another call from the same number, this time the man who left the message sounded Hindu could not pronounce his name correctly but it was funny because the message was word for word exactly the same as the one before.. it is obvious that these people have a script, it is obvious that this is a scam but it is also obvious that some people are afraid and will believe these creeps so they give in to whatever they require as form of payment. Do not fall for idiots like these THEY ARE JUST THIEVES!

Got a call from 1-206-414-0224 telling me he had an arrest warrant out for me to call back as soon as possible. I called back but it was a recording so I told him to call me back. Half hour later he did call back and asked me for my name,I said first of all how the hell is your name john whit and you sound like your from India REALLY . Then I said if you have a warrant out for me you should know my name and that the irs will never call you, they will contact you by Mail.I told him your just a scammer not an IRS officer. The phone went silent and he hung up.Beware it's a scam.

Similar to what has been said I also received a call from 206-414-0224 indicating that there was a warrant for my arrest regarding a tax issue and I needed to call back immediately to remedy the situation.  The message initially did catch me off guard.  I called back and made sure I didn't say my name.  I just stated that someone had called regarding a problem with the IRS.  I then asked who was the message for.  The caller mumbled the name and I asked again.  He came up with a name and I stated that he had the wrong number and the caller said "damn!" and hung up the phone.  Very weird.

Got a call from this number four times this week.  Voice sounds Dutch or German.  Says warrant for my arrest and seizure of the property from ILS..note "L" not "r".  No name or address given on the incoming call.  Tried to call back and got weird tones and finally message that line was busy.  Of course, this is a miserable scam, but thinking the IRS is after you is terrifying for an old fogey like me.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam (most certainly not German or Dutch). Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:

    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances - amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://m.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-centr ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf).
