The person calling from this number had poor English and stated that she was calling from the U.S. Department of Treasury because there was an enforcement action against my husband and I.  The caller ID was 206-497-1628 (which is not a Treasury number) and it was a Saturday, when the federal government is closed.  When I asked for details, the person had none.  When I stated that I was an attorney and could easily look up to see if something had been filed against me, she stated "it has been filed against you, you have not responded." I told her I would've had to have been served with the complaint if there was an action against me and that I hadn't been served. I also asked her: "what court is the enforcement action filed in?"  She had no answer to any of these questions.  She stated, "call this number - he will tell you details of what you owe and what the enforcement action is."  Total scam.

I got that call also a couple times.  I called back and the answering machine said he is Anthony for sure and I think Hopkins was the last name.

This number has been calling for a few days.  Today, at the 2nd call they left a message:  "Steve Mada" or something like that.  Strong accent.  Said calling from US Treasury Department for a federal criminal offense and I needed to appear before a court or something like that (entire message was not clear).  I checked it out on Openstreetmap.org  and the call is actually from Asia:  http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/2064971628#map=4/41.05/20.51

Nothing else I could understand except the phone number to call back and that they have tried to contact me several times and they suggest I cooperate.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). I just received the exact same call from the same number.  I, too, am an attorney and knew that it was a hoax.  "Steve" asked for no one by name and repeated himself over and over again.  I thought it was a recording and hung up.

I'm a paralegal.....got two messages today at homes saying the exact same thing.  At my office we have received over 1000 phone calls within a week.  Have report into phone company, local police and FBI. The number they are calling from to my office is 614-375-3058....they are rude and vulgar when you ask questions.  They called our reception a f...... c...

Left a message that we will be thrown in jail if we do not call back. They also state that we will be prosecuted before a Grand Jury, but as the other folks before this- they do not state a name of a person. There is a definite middle eastern dialect.

Received a voicemail message from "Keith Martin" (very heavy indian accent) saying that he was "calling for you" but doesn't identify who the "you" is that he is calling for - from the US Treasury. The message went on to say that he called before and "you need to call" and something about a felony. I saved the message in case I need it to pursue litigation. When calling the number back, there is a voicemail belonging to "Anthony Cooper" (also very heavy indian accent) and that you've called the "Department of Legal Affairs".  I called about 30 minutes ago which was about 5:30AM GMT+5:30 which would make sense - if this call is indeed spoofed and using VOIP to make the calls from that time zone. If I cared, I'd spend more time looking into this.

Same story here - got a voice mail stating action had been taken against us by the US Treasury. Didn't use my name in the message, heavy accent, and since I pay my bills I wasn't too worried!

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so.

Say he is with the US Treasury and I owe them money!  When I told him I was a disabled Veteran and lost most of my hearing he hung up.  We called him back and they hung up.  This is a scam, block him. I would like you to realize that I have to crawl to the phone and won't be bluffed into anything.

I have been bothered by these folks from 3 different phone numbers. some of the same folks (accents appear to be Asian as they pronounce certain letters incorrectly and they show that they don't understand US idioms). The numbers are 213-928-2652, 215-734-0221 and 206-497-1628.  I screen my phone calls and the last number had the call id of "RichmndBch WA". The "Steve Mattin" at the 3rd number said that they were calling from the Department of Legal Affairs for the Department of Treasury and that I have a "bad taxes" and the police have a warrant to arrest me if I don't pay.  I asked for a supervisor and he said that that would not help, that I needed to pay.  No specific amounts were quoted.  I told them that I knew that they were a scam and to not call my house again or else i will file a lawsuit against them.  They did not have my name so they could not tell me anything about why or who they were calling.  I told that I knew where they were calling from and that I would write another complaint to an actual federal government agency called the Federal Trade Commission.  Do we have any further recourse with these folks? Obviously they have been trolling around for a while!

I received the same call. And now I have called them back 50 times or better. They have begged me to stop but I will not. If someone tries to scam me in such a way I will do what ever it takes to mess them up. I suggest everyone one this site does the same. Tie up the phone lines. I have even played them John Wayne saying the pledge of allegiance.

Just received this call today as a voice message. Darn, I wish I could have answered it because it would have been fun for an otherwise boring afternoon. FYI, there isn't anything you can do. No one is going to look into this. As to the IRS investigating it, well, they have enough problems of their own.

So true. That is why I'm trying to get a little satisfaction for myself.  My local P.D. is aware and told me that an elderly woman paid them last week. So I've taken this on to drive them nuts. Yes it is working they with whom I've nicknamed [***] smear asked me to stop tying up their phone lines. If you can actually believe that. Hopefully more people will do the same.

Received the call from Steve Martin/Mattan very heavy eastern accent stating "you" need to contact me regarding enforcement actions executed by U.S. Treasury intended your U.S. suspension. Ignoring this will be an intentional 2nd offense for a federal criminal offense.  I suggest you call me immediately to avoid having to go before a Magistrate Judy & Grand Jury.  Repeated his number twice pushing the issue you must call immediately to avoid a federal criminal offense.  These people need to be stopped!!!  

I told these scammers I would send them 60 billion rupees LOL so the money would be in their native currency.
