The caller said her name was Samantha Collins, and she was calling to update our business information. She wanted to know how many employees we had, where we were located, and other operating information. I asked her what company she was with. She said she work for the State of California. I didn't believe her, there was a lot of background noise, and she had a strong Indian accent (there are a lot of call centers based in India) so I asked her what department she worked for and what was their website. She told me that she was with the Business Development Department and to just go the general state website to find their information. As I was talking to her I looked up the area code and found that it was based in San Antonio, Texas. So I asked her where her office was based out of she told me San Francisco. She must have gotten annoyed with my questions because she hung up on me. I called the number back and it went to Sprint PCS voicemail. She then called me back and wanted to try to get the information, again. I told her she was commiting fraud by representing herself as a state employee and trying to solicit information. I asked her why her phone number was based in Texas when she said her office was based in San Francisco. She said because I'm moving from Texas. I told her last time I checked the state didn't have employees use their personal phones to call businesses. I told her that I would be reporting her, she then hung up on me again. I called the State of California's Business, Transportation and Housing Department (this would be the agency over the department she said she was with). They verified that they had no such department, and that I should call local law enforcement. The local law enforcement said that it is not fruad until you actually give them your information, so there was nothing they could do. Just be advised not to give anybody any information even if they claim to be with the government!!!
