They called said they were the IRS if I didn't call back the local police would arrest me. They gave me a case number wow like I care they need to be stopped

They too called me claiming they were the IRS and that the IRS was suing me.  Bunch of BS.  They sounded like they were from India.

I had an absolute ball with this on a Friday night!  This fool called my husband's cell phone...leaving several messages and when he called them back some fool claiming to be the IRS  threatened court action, levy leins, jail time, if he did not pay - claiming the IRS had audited him for the past several years.  My husband is a smart man and figured out this was crap quick.  So we have been calling this jerk back every few minutes, leaving voice messages when he does not answer and talking to him when he does....my husband googled the location of the telephone number and told the guy he was at the corner and would bring him a check if he would give him his location. I called and reminded him about Karma (he has an indian accent) and told him he was setting himself up for this kind of distress to be perpetrated on his family, weve reported to the FTC...and I have continued to harass him for hours. ..I encourage everyone to do the same.  I intend to go on line and sign up for everything I can think of and input his phone number for people to call back.....I called and asked to pray with him to whomever he prays to...I've called with my dogs barking in the background.  Hey use your imagination...call and give an imaginative name and  have a blast.    

This [***] tard called me from a different number... i found this number through another commenter who was called from both. Anyway, his MO is to cancel one number when ppl catch on and pick up a new one via vontage. I too harass him. I call multiple times a day.  It's fun. Keep up the good work!  Hopefully, when he shuts this number down, we'll be able to find the new one!

you can hear in the background its a call center...the guy that called me sounded like he was from India...I called back and talk to some guy named Gary, got the address and googled where they are located this place is a joke.
the guy Gary claimed he was an attorney but did not want to speak to me after I threaten a lawsuit on falsification of information, slander and defamation of character.

I too received a call from someone from India claiming to be from the IRS and threating to have me arrested.  These calls (which I have received several from different numbers) need to stop!!!! It's extremely upsetting to receive prank calls of this nature.

Someone needs to stop them.

All you can do is block their numbers and report them to the REAL IRS. These are criminal exortionists working out of overseas boiler rooms in corrupt and apathetic countries and out of the reach of US law enforcment.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

My husband got one filled with threats and you can't reach IRS to confirm............

It is a scam based overseas. The IRS does not initiate contact over the phone.

If you paused a bit, and read Alfalfa's post before you SHOUTED at us, you would have learned it was a scam.  No need to tie up IRS phone lines to verify that fact.

There is a widespread IRS or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.

Short answer:

This has been ongoing for several years and originates in India or Pakistan among other foreign countries.

I got the same call today. They sounded legit, but when they wanted to pull cash and go to 7-11, and buy a prepaid card, that did it. I may have been born at night, but not last night.
