Reason for call and hangup is because its a computer controlled predictive dialer and there was a timeout on detecting your call. This number has been used for carpet cleaning telemarketing. There is a "TeleZapper" box you can buy to put between the wall and your phone or add the "SIT" tone to your answering machine message at the very beginning which will begin to reduce your unwanted telemarketing calls. This "SIT" tone is an industry standard which the systems listen for to determine bad / disconnected numbers and then their system will automatically remove you from their call list.

I was just reading today that most predictive dialers are now ignoring the SIT, so if you want to avoid automated telemarketers the best way would be to force people in pressing a number to cause your phone to ring. Such as an announcement that would say to press 1 for him and 2 for her. I know there are a few answering machines made for voice mailboxes and some where it makes the caller speak their name so you can filter calls you want to answer or send to voicemail.

Another choice would be a PBX which are becoming relatively inexpensive for home use now. The wireless phones available for these systems are really nice and clear, not like the garbage you get at your local Best Electronics store. The Panasonic TGP-500 is an excellent product, and I've used it some 500 feet from the antenna and still talk clear.

The best solution you can get is a VOIP provider.  It is cheaper and gives you more options to control the calls you receive.  There are several companies out there that will let you ....

Restrict (busy, voice mail, call validate etc.) calls to  your telephone depending on how you set it up.  An adjacent area code with businesses wanting to call you selling their services can be sent to voice mail.  A pestering telemarketer can be told to stop call you.  So many options....just look for a good VOIP provider that will take your telephone.

Carpet Cleaning Service. When I asked why I was being called despite being on the DNC list the operator replied "Because we are bored, sir"!

I picked up the phone and listened silently.  There was no immediate answer on the other end.... listened patiently and finally a recording of a woman's voice came on saying "WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE YOUR CARPETS PROFESSIONALLY STEAM-CLEANED?"  Then I just hung up the phone.  Funny, I live in New Jersey very close to Pennsylvania, and a New York telephone number is calling me to clean my carpet!  Imagine the cost of the gasoline just to get here!!

    Not Real
Don't buy into this company being a carpet cleaning company. They are debt collectors posing as a carpet cleaning firm, trying to confirm your phone #.  Source: someone who once work with those clowns.

I don't know anyone from New York and I will not pickup the phone, no way. Been getting way too many phone spam calls. Recently I read to hit # repeatably, which I am now doing hoping to knock their computers out and then hang up.

Just noticed two calls on caller ID (this afternoon) from 212-452-2211, I tried calling back, to ask for my number to be removed from their data base, but the number comes up (very conveniently) as:
"the number you called is not in service" (!!). I'm on the DNC registery, therefore, I (immediatly) reported it to the FCC.

A recording came on with a woman identifying herself as Diane who was selling carpet cleaning services.  I pressed "1" to set up carpet cleaning.  The woman who answered had a foreign accent and said, "Carpet Care."  I asked what city they were in and she said, "Costa Mesa." (This is a city near me in California but caller ID said they were in New York.  I asked to be removed from the call list and she hung up on me.
