What options does one have to defend themselves against intrusive callers?
• The Do Not Call list (Federal or State)
Works, but is effective against ONLY "legitimate" telemarketers. Political callers, surveys and some other callers are exempt. Scammers ignore the DNC list.
• NoMoRobo
A system offered by some telephone providers, to help automatically block robocalls. Google "nomorobo" to see if it works with your phone provider.
• Shouting, screaming, swearing at the caller
Nope. Does not stop calls. May make you hoarse, and will disturb nearby people.
• Call blocker app, device or service
Could be a good choice (even though the scammers can use fake phone numbers), and some apps are free!
Google "call blocker" for more information, or check your favorite online sales site for a list.
http://gg.gg/blockers
Your phone provider may also offer blocking services. Check their web page for information.
If you cannot use any of the above defenses, then:
• Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service
• Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers! All that does is verify your phone number! And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete.
• If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scammers" (or similar). Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group. - Bobby05| 1 replyCalled & hung up.............just another spammer.
To fight these scum you have to take action yourself.....the do not call list is a joke (the FCC and congress have proven to be lapdogs for big business telemarketers and is now moving to give them and big media priority fast lane access to the internet.....the FCC chairman is (surprise) a former telecom lobbyist. Also, since the politicians have exempted themselves from the list, do you REALLY think they care? Do yourself a favor and get a call blocker device and just plug it in to your phone line.....it will be the best money you ever spent.....lots of them out there, check Google and Fleabay. I got a device called Pro Call Blocker last year and it only costs around $50. It stores up to 1500 or so numbers and uses caller ID. When a spam call comes in, all you have to do is hit the blacklist button and presto, no more calls from this number (you can also manually enter numbers to block, entire area codes or all out of area numbers). It logs all calls in or out. If you get this one, be sure to get the latest version (last I looked it was 2.2). There is also another similar device called T-lock blocker which looks similar and came out late last year. Phone line is pretty quiet now as there are no repeat calls (although a lot of these spammers have multiple numbers so you have to block each one as they come in). Get yourself a device and post back a review........screw the spammers!! - Jimmy GAttention Seniors! The Government has . . .

- cairn| 1 replyHave received MANY calls from this source using various numbers and names, but when I check into it, it is always from the same "person" "company". I used my call block feature on my phone, Because each call has a different name, it must be programmed in for each received call. Don't understand why he keeps calling if he is blocked on the numbers he previously used. Or why he calls, lets the phone ring one time, and then hangs up. Obviously, I don't want his service. Wish the phone companies had more concern for their customers.
I AM on the Do Not Call List !!!- Caller: robert woodruff
- Mary replies to anonJuly 1 , 2014 10:37 am. My caller was also Robert Woodruff. No one on line when I answered.
- JoeyMDCID listed information on my home phone June 6-28 @ 1:28 name as WOODRUFF ROBERT. No message.
- TelcoITman| 1 replyI find some of the remarks posted about these ‘faux telemarketer calls’ amusing. I put together a software program that has logged over 380 of these annoyance calls since 2012. Those of you that let the calls roll to your answering machine, voicemail or worse yet answered the call you have just ensured you will get another of these calls. Maybe not from the same number, but they’ve just identified your number as valid and passed it on. Most of the initial calls originate from software (aka; ‘robocalls’) – once your number is identified as active, then a person may be there on the follow up calls. If you have the capability to ‘block’ the number that called – that is the best action. If you don’t have a blocking option, keep a phone with caller ID close by and simply hit ‘talk’ and ‘off’ simultaneously. If you really want to block them – there is reasonably priced software that a layman can install. Of the 380 calls I’ve blocked, only 16 have been in the last 6 months. So the message is simple – blocking works….
