- Caller: Roberto Ortiz
- Sally replies to Becky| 5 repliesMine was also from "Roberto Ortiz" and I did not answer and no message was left.
- Anon_e_mouse| 28 repliesNo name on the caller ID, but it was a recorded message from the "shipping department for Medic Alert" saying my order was ready for shipment and to "press 1 now".
- Caller: Medic Alert
- Call type: Telemarketer
- Uncle Al| 1 replyNot sure what Mr. Ortiz wants, but calling at 9:00 pm NY time from an alleged NY number makes one wonder if it isn't really an overseas call to begin with. The time NOT matching with the area code was the main reason I did not answer the call. I then came here to see if by chance it REALLY was an individual who had a reason to contact me, but seeing how all you other folks have also been contacted, i am sure it is some sort of LESS than reputable sales pitch.

- Resident47Caller abandoned late afternoon on 08 July before the recorder could respond. Previously we had what's reported as a medical panic button sales call try here on 20 June close to the same time of day, using another number from the same 662 exchange. That number surprisingly had a couple of residential listings on Intelius. I won't name those people here out of politeness. The 20 June caller abandoned at *two rings*, not only annoying but out of the FCC "safe harbor" for abandonment which illegal sales callers constantly violate.
I've little doubt that the same panic button caller is spoofing personal NYC numbers with no regard for who gets hurt. - anonymouscaller ID shows roberto ortiz, received 9:12 AM central. recorded message.."this is Paul from the shipping Department of Medical Alert" and I hung up after hearing that much.
- Caller: medical alert
- mikesame caller id name, abandoned when ans mach answered
- Gloria| 4 repliesSomeone tell Robert Ortiz to stop calling me! Because I have friends and family in NY I was interested in finding out who called me. This must be a sales call, a scammer, or something worse. I will investigate and get back to all of you.

- Doc| 1 replyMy mother got a call from this number today showing the, "Roberto Ortiz," name. I do have a good friend in Bolivia whose first name is Roberto. It threw her because she at first thought it was my friend but she looked at the Caller ID again and realized it was not my friend. She said there was a recording and as I read this scam number thread to her she remembered hearing, "Medical Alert," and something about pressing a number to initiate a package from the shipping department. SHE HUNG UP WHICH WAS THE EXACT THING TO DO. Don't argue. Don't curse them. Just hang up.
I cannot say for sure exactly what kind of scam this is. I know that a lot of, "connected inmates," in prison, particularly Fed Penn, have scams where they call you and convince you to press a number. Sometimes they may simply gain access to using your line and talk to a friend or contact in another country. Other times, they first call a number in which the person who answers their call knowingly connects you to a high dollar number. All YOU have to do is press the number they tell you. On the later scenario you could be left legally owing a phone bill for hundreds or thousands of dollars.
This flurry of calls may be directly or indirectly tied to the huge surge of thousands of illegal immigrants crossing our borders. They got to do something to survive and most don't have any money. Don't answer calls from weird numbers. I am labeling this, "Prank Call," because there is no, "Scam Call," in the menu.- Caller: SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM

Thus you've tainted the data. The drop menu does provide "telemarketer", which fits when you're being sold something. An option of "scam call" would inevitably be applied to calls which are legal but inconvenient.
} I cannot say for sure exactly what kind of scam this is.
The simpler dots have already been connected for you in this thread, but let's go over it again, and without crossing through any paranoid thoughts of "illegal immigrants" and prisoners gaming their phone services.
A "Senior Medical Alert" and variants thereof indicate an illegal sales call for portable "panic button" gadgets and their quite profitable monitoring services. On top of breaking the Telemarketing Sales Rule and Telephone Consumer Protection Act with canned sales pitches, anyone dumb enough to complete a sale may get poorly built equipment, or find the monitors aren't really monitoring, or maybe nothing at all. But your credit card will be dutifully billed each month for that crappy or nonexistent service and you'll likely be called for endless "upgrades", extra "service fees", and more illegal sales offers.
By my reckoning, this particular bunch of scammers likes to spoof phone numbers of apparently real residents of Manhattan. This one happens to have a Hispanic name. Guess what, The City is full of them, among people from every continent. The actual call center could be anywhere in North America or South America or South Asia or maybe floating on a barge in the Atlantic. Let's leave the xenophobia to those disgraceful rednecks who are now spewing hatred at frightened children on the south Texas border. - Ken (VA)Just received the call from this number. Never saw the Ortiz, Roberto name in the past but the 212 area code is notorious (looking at my own personal records) for telemarketing scams. Same old song & dance that a "medical professional" has given them my name for receipt of a medical alert system ready to be shipped. Also offering a 75% reduced cost prescription card for even more savings! Is this a great country, or what?!
Total illegal, unethical, and unsolicited SCAM by low life telemarketers. Also found that the call would not disconnect (not release my phone line) until their BS message was completed. Also ILLEGAL!
Reported to the DNC & FCC as always. Thanks to PhoneTray for blocking this call with its little recording of the SIT and the phone has been disconnected.- Caller: Ortiz, Roberto

- CBPercy replies to Patty| 3 repliesSame here...just received this call for first time a few minutes ago and they hung up on third ring. Will someone please tell me what good the "Do Not Call" list is??? We've been on it for years but these spam calls are increasing tremendously.
- Slim replies to CBPercy| 1 reply>> what good the "Do Not Call" list is? <<
The DNC list does not automatically block calls. Instead, it provides a list of "do not call" phone numbers to legitimate telemarketers who pay a fee for the list.
The DNC list exempts political callers, survey organizations, charities and companies with preexisting business relationships, but these organizations might have their own, internal Do Not Call list (ask them).
The DNC list is not effective against criminals, spammers and scammers, because those people do not subscribe to the DNC list, and do not care if you are on or off that list.
Its purpose is to stop calls from legitimate telemarketers, and it does a pretty good job at that.
Just think ... if there were no DNC, you would be receiving telemarketing calls from BOTH legitimate and scam callers!
Here is your reading assignment:

Remember, the Do Not Call site is a good one to report unwanted calls from LEGITIMATE telemarketers. The DNC list does not cover calls from criminal scammers & spammers. To report those, visit https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/
If you receive calls even after reporting them (and waiting a sufficient time), then you should consider using a call blocker app, device or service as your first line of defense. Google "call blocker" to see such things at Amazon or other sites.
