- Maria replies to MariaAlso, he called me 34 times within 30 minutes!!! And left me 15 voicemails!!!!
- William Maze| 1 replyI am an attorney in Michigan, and I was contacted by a former client to call these folks. They were calling the client claiming to have an arrest warrant, and they intended to send letters to my client's employer to get her fired. They claimed to be lawyers working for the Soulier law firm. They alternatively claim to work for the Federal Register Consumer Affairs. Both of these suggestions are bizarre. When I called, the thickly accented guy went off muttering about begging for money by a church for three or four days to buy McDonald's. He then swore at me and hung up. He never talked about the account at all, except to repeatedly insult my client. I can't tell if this is a real debt collection company or if it is an elaborate phishing scam employing telemarketers. (I suspect it is scam.)

- Attorney| 4 repliesI am an attorney in Lexington, KY and I received a call from someone today who was in distress about possibly being arrested for not paying on a loan and the call came from a Ronnie Cooper (Indian accent) at 213.289.3789. This person sent them $2500 because he thought it was from a few online loans he had taken out. I had him record a phone call wherein Ronnie Cooper threatens to have him arrested in 30 minutes and that the Court would not give him bail and he'd be in jail for 4-5 days if he didn't send more money. This is totally illegal and a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. I attempted to call Ronnie Cooper and he barely talk to me and actually continued to threaten to have my person arrested. He hung up on me numerous times and said his attorney would be calling me in 5 minutes - shock - no call from anyone! Then this Ronnie Cooper calls my client and I told him do not answer any calls from this number and he takes it to the next level and leaves a voice-mail saying he is going to "kill" him now! My guy is reporting this to local law enforcement and we will be informing the FBI regarding this scam - but please, please do not send any money or even talk to anyone calling from 213.289.3789 or claiming to be a Ronnie Cooper with Cash Advance America. If you've taken out online loans then get everything in writing, with account numbers, addresses, etc and make sure you know who you are paying and where it is going! The numbers and names will likely change in this scam so be very careful and smart about someone calling - if they start threatening to have you arrested this is not a legitimate collections agency or company - so ask them to send something in writing and hang up on them and do not answer any more calls and block, the number

- Jason replies to ashleyThe FBI is investigating this because their is a front man living here in America (who is from India) - The money initially goes to him in his American account and then he feeds the money to his "operators" who are located in India.
ABC News link: http://gma.yahoo.com/phantom-debt-collectors- ... topstories.html
Report them to the FBI because it's still under investigation and there has been lawsuits filed against the indian guy who is living here in America.
To file with the FBI: https://tips.fbi.gov/
To file with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/
They're still working on this case, but since the front man lives here in America and ABC went to his house and all the money initially goes to his account, this might be just the loophole that the FBI will need to get these folks stopped - leinadI got a call from this guy today and basically the same story as the people above. I called back a couple of times and the guy became really rude. Said he was going to google all the information he has beloning to me so people could steal my identity. For a second this guy had me thinking it was real. Im going to change my bank account information as soon as possible.

My story is the same as most of the above, and basically this man threatened me to within an inch of my physical and financial life. Change your phone number and banking information and notify the FTC if you are contacted by this individual. It is a scam and they are criminials.

- Alfalfa replies to victimThis is a criminal extortion ring operating out of India. ABC News released an investigative report on it in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
