Caller claims I am in real trouble, tells me to call back to the 213 area code but makes a mistake when he repeats the number he says 313, Is Michigan where the scammer is calling from?

No, from the post above, sounds like the caller is yet another foreign extortionist scammer.  Don't bother calling.  And block the number if you have that feature on your phone.

TIGTA Warns of “Largest Ever” Phone Fraud Scam Targeting Taxpayers

WASHINGTON — The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA) today issued a warning to taxpayers to beware of phone calls from individuals claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in an effort to defraud them.

“This is the largest scam of its kind that we have ever seen,” said J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. George noted that TIGTA has received reports of over 20,000 contacts and has become aware of thousands of victims who have collectively paid over $1 million as a result of the scam, in which individuals make unsolicited calls to taxpayers fraudulently claiming to be IRS officials.

“The increasing number of people receiving these unsolicited calls from individuals who fraudulently claim to represent the IRS is alarming,” he said. “At all times, and particularly during the tax filing season, we want to make sure that innocent taxpayers are alert to this scam so they are not harmed by these criminals,” George said, adding, “Do not become a victim.”

Inspector General George urged taxpayers to heed warnings about the sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, noting that the scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every State in the country. Callers claiming to be from the IRS tell intended victims they owe taxes and must pay using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license.

The truth is the IRS usually first contacts people by mail – not by phone – about unpaid taxes. And the IRS won’t ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS also won’t ask for a credit card number over the phone.

“If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and uses threatening language if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling,” he said.

The callers who commit this fraud often:

Use common names and fake IRS badge numbers.
Know the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security Number.
Make caller ID information appear as if the IRS is calling.
Send bogus IRS e-mails to support their scam.
Call a second time claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles, and the caller ID again supports their claim.

If you get a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS asking for a payment, here’s what to do:

If you owe Federal taxes, or think you might owe taxes, hang up and call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions.
If you don’t owe taxes, call and report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.FTC.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.

TIGTA and the IRS encourage taxpayers to be alert for phone and e-mail scams that use the IRS name. The IRS will never request personal or financial information by e-mail, texting or any social media. You should forward scam e-mails to phishing@irs.gov. Don’t open any attachments or click on any links in those e-mails.

Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes winner) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.

It looks like I received a call from "Brian Miller" also.  He told me at first that he was from the Treasury Department.  It was a really bad connection and I could hear a lady talking in the background, so I hung up.  20 minutes later (as if I don't have caller ID) he called back and left a message claiming he was with Legal Affairs and that I need to call back in order to avoid a legal mess.

    Bad person!!!!!

This Middle-Eastern sounding guy with a SUPER thick accent said he was from the US Treasury Dept and that I have criminal charges against me, that I should have received the letter that was mailed last week telling me this.  He said that tomorrow morning a local police officer and an officer from the US Treasury would be coming to my house.  I asked him what time, so I could have coffee ready.  I said "This is ridiculous," and he said "Keep up with that attitude and just wait and watch what happens to you."  Then he hung up.

Just received this call also.  Man with accent identified himself as Ryan Miller and then confirmed I was who he was calling for.  He immediately asked my attorneys name who was representing me in this matter.  I asked why do I need an attorney and he told me to call Office Mike Lee from the US Dept of Treasury and his number is 213-437-6041.  I was initially thinking this was legit because lets face it the federal government hires all.  Before hanging up I asked for his callback number and he told me that if I did not respond within 24hrs the arrest warrant would be served at my home or work.  UFB.  I attempted to call the number and get a voicemail for a whole different person.  So I then reach out to a friend who assured me this is a scam and these P'sOS get $$ all the time from unsuspecting victims.  They will usually tell you to get to the local 7-11 etc. and buy green dot cards and call them back when you get them so you can read the PIN number off the back.  They are done.  They have the money and you are out.  I believe green dots have a max of $500USD.

    Scammed in GA
Received the same call but figured it was a scam. I doubt someone from the US Treasury would sound like a customer service representative for Dell. They also had no details when I pressed them so I googled the number and came here. Follow the advice of the poster above and report to FTC.

Just got a call from same guy who couldn't say my name correctly so I stated the person asked for does not live here.  He attempted to correct the name and finally I asked what he wanted.  He said he was from the "state department" and that a legal proceeding was being started against me and did I know anything about this to which I stated I had no idea what he was talking about.  At that point he gave me the name of the officer "Keith Nelson" that I needed to call right away to get information from.  I said alright and hung up with Mr. "state department" and called the number given to me.  The voice that answered sounded familiar but I stated I was told to call this number and ask for Officer Keith Nelson to which the voice said he was Keith Nelson.  I paused then said "Gosh you sound just like the guy that I just talked to"  to which he responded "We are not the same person you F...ing B..ch."  At that point I laughed and said "that was professional" and hung up.  What a dick.
