Claimed to be from the Department of Legal Affairs for the US Treasury

My wife received the call on her cell phone from "Adam Peterson" (Asisan accent) and he said our son should call him back, claiming it was a "legal emergency." Said he was from the Department of Legal Affairs for the U.S. Treasury." I called the number and got a greeting from a "John Marshall." Asian accent. I work for the U.S. Dep't of Justice. Sounds totally phony to me.

I got the exact same call just 30 minutes ago.  There is no Department of Legal Affairs for one.  Then after very little sleuthing, the IRS rarely phones, preferring to send many letters first.  While it did raise my heart rate, I agree it's a scam.

I got the same call stating that I had better retain an attorney.  Would like to find this scammer and knock his teeth into the back of his skull.

They had the nerve to call three times and leave two messages.  Adam Peterson called, and when you call that number back, it's John Marshall.  He talks about retaining an attorney - for what?  I too would like to knock his teeth into the back of his skull.  These people are scum.

Here is the link to the Office of the Inspector General noting this is a Fraud Alert.

I got the call yesterday.  I kept calling to get a live person.  Final reached Mr. Marshall.  I let him talk for a moment then told him  I was recording the call for the Federal Department of Justice in Washington DC.  He starting talking real fast and stuttering.  Said he would put the papers in the mail and hung up real fast...........he didn't even bother to get an address......it was so funny.....I was LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got my third phone call from 213/533-0434 (one today and two last week) -- same guy each time with an Asian accent and hard to understand -- terrible connection -- but calling from the Department of Legal Affairs for the US Treasury.  I googled his phone number, started laughing and told him I was reading all the posts about this being a scam.  He said he was sending a police officer to my door, I said "okay" and he hung up.

I received this call today.  The first person asked if I received a notification of legal action stating they will seize my home and fine me up to 70,000 if I don't pay off $4000 in debt to the US Treasury, for a mistake I made on my 2008 taxes.  I told them I didn't receive any type of notification, and they transferred me to a supposed US Treasury Officer.  The "officer" was belligerent to me after I told him this sounded like a scam, and he said he was going to send a federal officer to my home to take me to jail within 30 minutes of him hanging up on me.  Both people I spoke with had a heavy Hindi or Asian accent.  The caller ID showed it coming from Los Angeles.

Confirmed fraud attempt (department of legal affairs of US treasury script). This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

He first asked for me by my name, then said he was with Legal Affairs for US Treasure. I asked why his caller ID name was blocked. He said he would give me his number. I said that doesn't matter, that doesn't prove who he is. He said He mailed me letters and gave me my correct address. This is scary. I am calling the IRS who has put me on a 30-60 minute wait time, just to make sure I don't have any problems.

Ugh, I don't have time for this crap.

•report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so.
