- Fran| 1 replyI received a call about 0940 today from this number. A somewhat threatening message was left in triplicate from Steve (English is not his first language). He claimed to be with Treasury Enforcement and if I did not return his call criminal penalties could result. This is definitely a scam. It sounded phony and a little research on the US Treasury site proves it is a scam. It happens so often they are not interested in individual reports. The US government communicates in writing.
- RexIRS replies to FranThis is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). - Mike-in-MD replies to MJSteve Martin, eh? Well he sure has chosen an appropriate name for his comedic attempts at a scam.
- MadelineSame threatening message others received from phone #213-686-3306.
Definately a scam.....so not calling back. Truly disgusting that these calls persist.- Caller: "Name Unknown"
- Ed| 1 replyI just received the same call, same number, from yes, "Steve Martin." The automated voice started mid-stream, then repeated in duplicate. The voice didn't address anyone by name. Phony (pun intended) as they come.
- Caller: US Treasury...something
- Madeline replies to Ed...or as the message Steve's left........"Tweasury". LOL
- BillSame thing: a call at 5:30 pm on my home phone from a guy with an Indian accent claiming to be from "Treasury Enforcement". The call came from 213-686-3306 and threatened some kind of legal action if I did not call him. The voice also said it was a recorded call.
- Caller: Treasury Enforcement
- Call type: Debt collector
- EdTWO MORE robocalls sounding exactly the same were left on my answering machine last night. They were both again in triplicate. They were long enough for my phone to display I was nearly out of message capacity. Same ol' Steve guy with the accent.
