Jack Wilson (fake name) called saying he was from the US Treasury Dept. and the I was going to be arrested for multiple tax evasion charges. It sounded very official, gave me the charges, case #, etc. He sent me down to the local shopping center to get a form for the IRS to pay them what he said I owed. When I got there he sent me into Safeway to buy gift cards for almost $2,000.00. This raised a big red flag to me. I said I was going to go talk to the Highway Patrol outside. He then said I couldn't discuss this with anyone and he just initiated a 60 second count down where a warranty for my arrest would be issued and my local Sheriff would come out to my house to arrest me. The Highway Patrol said it looked like a scam. I went to the Sheriff's office, they said it was a scam and I didn't have a warrant.
When got home I called him back, surprisingly he answered but wouldn't admit he was Jack Wilson until I called him out on his scam. He then said ha-ha this is Jack Wilson and began saying he was f _ _ _ _ _ _ my mother, Americans are stupid and dirty, to suck his d _ _ _ , and many other things, etc. We cussed back and forth for about 10 minutes until I had to hang up to get my kid at school. He even called back as I was heading out the door but I couldn't answer.

    What a slime ball.

    Don't fall for this scam!

The caller said that he was from the Department of Treasury and that the IRS is about to file a delinquent case against me. He asked whether I have a lawyer and I said no but could easily get one. I told him that he has the wrong person because we do not have a big income and have been filing our taxes religiously.

    Informational post:

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail

Other characteristics of this scam include:

Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:

If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.

Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail tophishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Left a message from "Officer Judy Smith" pf the US Treasury saying that I had a case filed against me in federal court regarding taxes, and that i was in danger of being arrested if I did not call them immediately.  Synthesized voice. I did not call them back so I don't know what they would have asked for.

    Don't fall for this
They left an official sounding message this morning from this phone number saying they were from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The guy who answered has a  heavy accent and said the IRS was trying to reach me because of tax fraud. He gave me a made-up case ID number and arrest warrant number and said the Sheriff would be at my house within 45 minutes to arrest me and I would be in jail for months, if not years. I asked him what the purpose of his call was, and he said just to inform me of the legal case against me. (Other callers said he asked them to go to the local grocery and get gift cards to pay this off debt.) Don't fall for this. I called and reported the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484. This guy is a scumbag with apparently time on his hands to hassle people.

So I called the number back using google hangouts multiple times. Everytime the person answered with the different response. First it was the Smith's residence, then it was the IRS, then it was something else. I did not answer back and the person went into cussing me out for not answering .... It was nice to give them a taste of their own medicine.

This phone call came to me at work and the threats of immediate arrest , imprisonment and financial ruin- there was a warrant out for my arrest and the sheriff had been dispatched the arrest me - handcuff and shackle me immediately and I "better have a good criminal atty because I would probably not be seeing the light of day again with all the mounting charges against me for tax evasion and deception and if I hung up to call my tax service - all of my bank accounts, home, car and any other assets would be frozen , seized and confiscated immediately - I would not be allowed to speak or see anyone not even my husband ever again- you will be lucky to see the light of day EVER in your remaining pitiful life- you miserable thief "-- FREAKED OUT- does not even begin to cover it!!- I finally got my wits about me and simply asked -- Since you know everything about me -- What is my Social Security Number - I told that is  their priviledged information that I was not ALLOWED to know this .... When I pressed the issue -- the man that had been verbally abusing me hung up-- GOOD RIDDANCE-- Crazy terrible people-- playing with peoples heads is horrible and not right -

Thanks for the info... I heard an official broadcast on the radio the other day and it said " The IRS will not call you, text you, or send you an e-mail, they will contact you via regular mail and if you receive anything else other than printed mail, it is not them." I was skeptical but after reading all of the posts, I am reassured and I personally don't have any loose ends out there so this didn't make any sense. Thanks again.

I received the automated voice call on my voice mail. I called the number back. The person answering has a very heavy Indian-sounding accent. I kept asking how do I know he is actually from the US Treasury. He asked how does he know who I am. I said you called me I don't need to prove myself to you, but you have to prove yourself to me. We went back and forth. When he swore at me, I hung up. Big clue: He was using my nickname, not my legal name. So I knew something was up, but wasn't 100% sure until I saw this.

The home message is very long so much of the recorded message was not captured.  A threat of arrest for tax evasion was mentioned along with the 213-784-2840.  I did call back and a fellow with an accent explained he was a representative of the US Treasury Department.  He asked if I had an attorney to represent me in court today.  When I mentioned that no written correspondence had been sent about tax evasion he began to get very sullen.  He may also have been annoyed by all the crying as he never provided any of the details listed in some of the other notices posted  Attempted to call the IRS (I have a very healthy fear of this organization), but all the lines were horribly congested.  Called the company that submits my taxes and was told to contact The Treasury Fraud Alert number which, by the way, was jammed with other calls.  I did speak with an attorney who said the IRS corresponds 0NLY by mail.

Subject: Re: U.S. Treasury Fed Claims Call

    Hey Dad,
I used the information from your email regarding Judy Smith of the US Treasury at 213-784-2840.  It turns out that the entire thing is a scam.  If you type that phone number into Google you'll find that dozens of people have been contacted just this month regarding the same threats you've received.  I guess they're just fishing around and looking for a sucker to pay up some fake debts.  I'd suggest reporting the information just so they can have it on file.  Nice to know there are still plenty of slimeballs out there trying to scam people out of their money.  Hope this is helpful.
    Love, Dan

    Dan,
I got a strange phone message from an Officer Judy Smith  of US Treasury re a claim filed against me, or something like that.  I should call her back at 213-784-2840 "before you get arrested".
Strange call as she never called me by name, never gave info about the claim filed or anything.  Just the threat that I call back before I get arrested.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.
