Not a good idea.
If you change numbers, your "new" number will be somebody else's old number ... and who knows what scammers' lists it may be on.
Instead, what options does one have to defend themselves against intrusive callers?
• The Do Not Call list (Federal or State)
Works, but is effective against ONLY "legitimate" telemarketers. Political callers, surveys and some other callers are exempt. Scammers ignore the DNC list.
• NoMoRobo
A system offered by some telephone providers, to help automatically block robocalls. Google "nomorobo" to see if it works with your phone provider.
• Shouting, screaming, swearing at the caller
Nope. Does not stop calls. May make you hoarse, and will disturb nearby people.
• Call blocker app, device or service
Could be a good choice (even though the scammers can use fake phone numbers), and some apps are free!
Google "call blocker" for more information, or check your favorite online sales site for a list.
http://gg.gg/blockers
Your phone provider may also offer blocking services. Check their web page for information.
If you cannot use any of the above defenses, then:
• Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service
• Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers! All that does is verify your phone number! And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete. http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/one-ring-cel ... ing-your-wallet
• If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scammers" (or similar). Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group. - Erin sullivan| 4 repliesDoes anyone know the name of this company they just scamed me out of 1200 dollars

- williami keep getting calles from this number and said that i was approved for a 3000 dollar loan i called it back and they told me that i had to buy a money pak green dot card to pay for processing fees for a 190 dollars then i can get loan dont do it bc it is a scam for sure i didnt do it but that has scam written all over it
- William| 2 repliesone that did get me i applied for a loan and got it and then 7 days later i got a call saying that i owe them all the money back now or there were going to take me to court for stealing money. This is a scam also and if this happens to you say go ahead take me to court then a three weeks later when your first payment is due for that loan you pay that the people whoo scammed me called me from all kinds of numbers even 911 and they always ask to get a paper card from the store usually green dot money pak any paper card that you have to scratch the numbers off back to pay for a loan is a huge scam dont ever do it. And if you get some of the numbers that call you go into google search find number and search that number and see if it pops up if it does call them and play a little be like ok so you guys are calling from where ever and play back with them that will get them to stop calling
- KathyYes a scam. They call and call. Stated they were from American loan but good English not spoken.
- Caller: American Loan
- Muriel replies to William| 1 replyHi William! You said you did get the loan?
- ShillKill replies to MurielNo, it is a scam. Advance fee loans are illegal. If you pay these crooks any money, it is gone forever
- Harvey CarrThese people call multiple times a day. I have threatened them with authorities, FBI, etc. I am a Certified Legal Manager and have told them so and that I work with state and federal courts and have reported the number. I have demanded they remove me from their database, yet they keep calling. They keep claiming I applied for a loan and they ignore me when I tell them I did not.
- Marilyn Uyehara| 1 replyYes. This is a scam. I was approved for $3000, but have to pay a $190 deposit and $140/month payments for 24 months.
Do the math..What loan company is only going to charge $330 for a 24 month loan? Oh, I'll get the $190 back with the $3000 today....uh huh.- Caller: AmeriLoans
- ilyrosepieThis has to be a scam. I applied for loans online yesterday and they called me today saying theyre from American Loans and I got approved for $3000 at $140 a month for 24months that will be automatically deducted from my bank account. However they said they need a verification voucher prooving who I am so I must first go and buy a green dot money pack card and put $149 on it call them back give them the pin number and the $3149.00 will be deposited in my account. I told them no thanks and another lady called me back within a few minutes again. I told her I was not interested and she got offended insisted they where not a scam. I told her I would first do my research as a consumer I have that right. And here I am on this webpage. Don't give these people a dime. It most likely is a scam. Reputable fast cash loan companies charge you a very high intrest rate but never ask you for money up front.

If you or a friend need a loan, you really should read this:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0153-choosing-credit-counselor
In fact, the more you need the money, the more urgent it is to read that information!
Protect yourself!
Recognize that NO legitimate company is going to offer you a loan, without their doing some background / credit checks on you, and they WILL generally need a snailmailed, signed contract.
Yes, if you send them up-front money, it WILL disappear!
If you or a friend fell for the scam, please try to educate your other friends. The only way to stop these scams is to cut off their source of money!
