1-908-244-2001 from Union NJ left a heavily accented message screaming that he was Mr. Martin and just got a case file on my husband and the decision was up to him. We called for information about what the decision was and were told that my husband had a previous loan from June 2007-never took one- and if he did not pay 1,154 dollars via walmart money gram he would be arrested. the gentlemen stated this was not a joke and he was filing a complaint with the attorney generals office. He was screaming and his English was very broken. He than proceded to call my husband a dumb, stupid, iggnorant American. The voice sounded very similary to Frank Miller from phone # 214-245-1402 in Texas. I called that # and asked for Mr. Martian and they were going to get him. They must have several #'s invarious states.

Number 410-807-4508 called and Ted Watson answered and put a Officer Wilkinson on the phone. Stated he was an officer for the Financial Crime Division of the US Bank. Heavy Indian accent and very broken English. The exact same phone call as from 214-245-1402. My wife and I filed a complaint with FTC.

i actually just received a call this morning, 5/28, from mary anderson. 214-245-1402. she said they had 3 charges against me for a payday loan i had taken out in Jan. 2006. i actually just paid them $442.78 with my debit card. Around '04 & '05, i had a couple of payday loans out. i ended up filing bankruptcy at the end of '05. i really cant even be sure if i applied over the internet for this loan in 06. but they scared me so i made the partial payment today and the rest is to be paid on Monday, 6/2. what should i do? i will be closing my account b/c now they have my debit card number and i am sure they will use it. being that i filed b'ruptcy, i didnt want to get in trouble with my lawyers, if i did take out this loan in 06'. they told me i had to pay it by noon today, but i was given the option of paying by debit card. she didnt mention a money gram. are there any lawyers who can answer my question? our conversation was recorded. i stated at the end that i paid this amount today and the rest to be paid on 6/2. they have my ss#. mary acted as if she couldnt answer any quest w/o first consulting the "lawyer", like what state they were in. she says Florida. i am in AL. what can i do. can you be arrested over payday loans????

Relax; it's a scam. Be sure not to pay them anything.

There is no "Financial Crime Division" or "National Crime Division". This is the same group of foreign scammers who use caller ID spoofing software or VoIP to disguise where they're really located. They also use many other fake names such as US National Bank, US Legal Investigation Bureau, Hopkins Law Office and Morgan Associates, just to name a few.  One thing to remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors) have the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing.) These same scammers also routinely impersonate bankers, lawyers, FBI agents, police and other law enforcement officials, which, obviously, is illegal as well. (Besides, law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection, and debt is a civil matter, not criminal.)

The bottom line is, these are criminals trying to steal your money. I suggest you do all the following (most of which you can do online):

1) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.

2) Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov  Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone and give them all the details.

3) File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.

4) File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org

5) File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01

If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

Hope this helps.

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern again and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded false threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that they're laughable:

It might be difficult to get your money back.  At the very least, be sure to cancel whatever accounts to which you gave them access, and report them to the all the law enforcement links above.

As for getting your money back, you probably should consult a consumer law professional. Many such attorneys work on contigency, so don't worry about not being able to afford their help. Here are links to just a few such law firms and consumer rights organizations:
