- AnnoyedCalled back.. the message made it sound like they were a law firm, looking for someone who missed a court date. They said my number was for a guy named Steven.. no one here by that name. Said they would remove the number.. yea.. got another call .. who ever this is, what ever it is.. is just not right. If it's a collector.. they can't just start out by making someone think they already have them in court and now are in more trouble because they missed a date?? How scary is that?? and to tell a company that..and then ask for an employee?? they don't say it's for a debt.. just missed court. These people are going to cost someone a job!!

- Alfalfa replies to CLBThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

- Privatewithin 20 minutes this company called my cell phone, home phone, work phone and 3 references, they do not give you an opportunity to listen to the message and return a call before they go and embarrass you by calling everyone you know. They also claim they have been calling for 2 months when this is the 1st call or any notification I received. Horrible people and I will be filing a complaint as well getting my attorney to place a call to them.

- Henry replies to ScamYou need to send them a registered letter instructing them to cease calling you during working hours and to cease calling your work or you will file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission for violating the Fair Credit Collection Act. Alsoinform them that if you loose your job because of their calling you during work hours you will sue them for damages.

- GeenaCalled me twice and a personal friend asking for my location, and my work phone which is completely illegal by the way. If they try those scare tactics on you, you can play fire with fire and tell them you have an officer on the phone who'd like to speak with them.
- Caller: None given- callers name is apparently Yolanda
- BigAThis is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
