- DanGot same call as others. Claiming a local merchant is filing fraud charges against me and that my background check came back spotless but I need to call to resolve the issue. Hmm. If a local merchant was defrauded, wouldn't local law enforcement do the investigating instead of some dude 2000 miles away in another state??? Scam, scam, scam.

However received a letter from a place called Consumer Recovery Group Telling me I have 10 days to resolve a debt. but did not disclose info about the debt. Is this for real? I know scams by phone. But threatening to take someone to court etc by mail for a debt you have no information about?? REALLY

- Ally| 1 replyI have received calls from these people saying that I owe nearly 700 to MyCashNow, which I took out before I got married and legally changed my last name. I just hit my 6th wedding anniversary. Even if I did owe it, statute of limitations for debt collection is 6 years in Ohio, so they would be SOL either way. It's against the law for a debt collection company to threaten to sue you. They didn't even get the full name of the FDCPA right. Also, they say I have 10 days, when by their own admission, the FDCPA says I have 30 days to dispute the debt. Also, the letter claims that Consumer Recovery Group is in Cincinnati, Ohio, which is 1.5 hours from me, which is clever of them. However, the area code 216 that they gave is a Cleveland, Ohio area code, which is 4 hours from me.
I'm not buying this, and they are going against the FDCPA, by A) not giving me 30 days, and B) telling me not to collect the original creditor. Probably because I would have it confirmed with MyCashNow that I paid it off over 6 years ago.- Caller: Consumer Recovery Group

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - Jay Phillips replies to Lisa| 2 repliesI recieved a letter also. Saying I owe $1012.50. The "respectfully demanded" that I do not contact the former creditor. Red flag # 1. Also there is no name after the letter. It says Very truly yours, Consumer Recover Group. What kind of Debt collector says very truly yours? Also 10 days to pay or they will commence legal action against me... Haha see you in court a**holes!!!
It's not legit. - Laura replies to Jay PhillipsI keep getting BS calls from all sorts of numbers, they all claim the same things you are stating about a payday loan and i have ignored them all up til now when I got a letter...thank god I googled the phone numbers on this letter, they all come up with scam BS. The letter is exactly the same as you are saying, no signature just the truly yours and the name of the "group" and it is also in my maiden name. The company doesn't even exist if you try to google it. Not going to take this seriously....how do you report this?? who do you contact?? how do you find out for real if it's a legit company and that when you get these things?? This is the first time I've gotten a letter in the mail, they are trying to really step up their game.
